It’s a good thing they have addressed the long update download and install times with this new rapid response update system. Hopefully they will further improve the experience by providing updates without the need for a restart. Even logout/login would be preferable.

Some things patched require rebooting, never mine this article claiming it was a new rapid response update instance. The latest MacOS ventura beta downloads/preparation/installation is way faster than not too long ago.

As I understand it from my job, there are two types of RSR update:
  1. OS-Level - requires a regular reboot (unlike most updates which reboot and then install, which takes longer)
  2. Safari-only - no reboot required, just a relaunch of Safari

Linux, Windows they all do this since many many years.... what's the big deal?
Am I missing something?
Like iOS, macOS uses a secured immutable APFS volume which means it's not possible to just patch a few files. This means every OS install is the same anywhere and prevents viruses/rootkits. Patching is a lot of work: create a new copy of the OS volume, patch the contents, verify if the signatures match and use the new volume instead of the old one.

Since Ventura it's possible to 'stack' these secure volumes installing a simple patch should take less time.

I’m happy this is something Apple has started doing.

I wonder if this means smaller major updates? The major updates should be delta updates right?

Ok. Let's just say I can tell you with 100% certainty that the RSR was just a test. However, I respect the NDA I agreed to, so I won't post the proof. Just say, if you know what AppleSeed for IT is, the proof is there.
What about whats addressed in the support link?
Guess Apple didn’t release the first 13.2 beta with Dec 13th changes.

Check out this article. It details how the size of updates have been shrinking:

No, minor and security updates will likely be the same size. Any RSRs that Apple issues have will be included in the next security/minor update. (It is unclear if RSRs can replace security updates 13.X.Y or not.)

But, users can uninstall the RSR and Enterprises can even block them, if they want. So, Apple needs to roll them in to the next update.

Clicked on the "For information..." link and did not find anything about the content of this update. I hate when companies don't keep their documents up to date. I also hate when companies don't provide any release notes with software updates, such as Microsoft Office:

Not even a link to a webpage with release notes. Do they expect users to just blindly install without question? Why do companies like Apple and Microsoft not want to let people see information about their updates?

Yesterday, my iMac 13,1, late 2012. was updated to Ventura 13.2 Beta (22D5027d), with a new installation on the external HDD. OCLP was updated to version 0.5.3.

The Rapid Security Response failed several times to install. The error message suggested checking the internet connect, but according to AirPort Utility it is working without problems.

Will try again tomorrow.
