My N Range seems better after upgrading my firmware. Used to get some stutters using AirPlay to stream a slingbox to my appletv. Works better now.

Didn't update Airport Utility yet, so can't comment.

Anyone know if I get any benefit turning off 802.11a/g and going to n/g only? Don't have any a/b devices anymore.

Lastly, I have removed some old G airport expresses from the network, but there seems to be no way to switch the base station from WDS to remove the old devices from the iOS app. Anyone know if this is possible in the ios app without resetting the router?

Sorry, I looked again, and 5.6 is Lion only. It exists primarily to support older 802.11b/g devices.

Well, isn't that just freakin' great. Guess I'll have to warn my wife not to update the firmware if she sees any prompts; she's got an SL iMac too. The AEBS works a charm as is, and I don't want to mess it up.

Makes for an awesome simultaneous dual-band bridge since even the WAN port on the newer Extremes is Gigabit. I'd never use mine for more than that...the AirPort Utility just does way too little from a configuration standpoint.

I've thought about buying one to use as a bridge. I agree, would be convenient and very nice. It's still just a little too expensive for me to use solely as a bridge. Plus I would have to worry about it playing nice with other non-Apple gear.

Edit: oh, misread your post. You use an AE as a bridge. Yes, I do too.

I'm loving the update. Nice look and breaks it down even simpler...not dumbing down. It all depends on how you view it.

Reading all the backlash from the techies in this thread is comedy.

A bit dramatic don't you think considering two versions of the utility were released?

You can choose between the normal version, or the easier to use version, or both. I don't understand why this is a bad thing.

Yeah, by the writing's on the wall. Apple is not going to continuously release 2 versions of AU from now on. The release of 5.6, if anything, was a wise PR move. Let people get used to the new layout, 6.0, then in a couple more updates, kill-off the old layout completely.

That said, if I remember correctly, one can easily configure their router through Lion Server. With the new price point, maybe this is where configurable Airport will now live.

Someone help me here please... I have been having seriously slow speeds from my airport extreme recently in any mode except 802.11n only (5GHz). In this mode I get great speeds up and down but my iPhone wifi cannot function at 5GHz. This firmware upgrade did not fix does anyone know whats going on with my extreme????????

Welp. That's it. I'm buying a cisco router ASAP. Apple needs to know that some of us are intelligent and don't need or appreciate this hand holding. As soon as I have to JB my Mac I'm headed out...

Good luck with that. The DPC3825 I have now that is as useless as teats on a bull. I couldn't take the issues anymore so I just pulled the trigger on a new modem and Airport Extreme. The device is useless to me if I can't connect my Macs and other Apple devices consistently.

I'm fine with both versions, but as you said the new one is very easy to configure and i believe that was the point.

Not only that, but the AEBS does something I haven't seen any other router do: intercept iTunes item requests from my :apple:tv using a Bonjour proxy, wake up my sleeping iMac and tell it to feed that item to the :apple:tv, then tuck it back in to sleep when it's done. Any other router would simply report my iMac's iTunes library as unavailable.

Yes, the AEBS does play very nicely with Apple products. Extremely nice, no pun intended. But when it comes to actually router function and throughput, not so pretty.

Is it a good time to buy an Airport? I need a router... soon.

I'm sure you could buy some heavily discounted ones right in this thread.

What. The. ****.

Okay, I'm about to jump ship. **** this ****.

I am so sick and tired of Apple targeting the idiots of this world. Especially when I invested $10K in their ****ing hardware, and this is how I get treated? You take away all the options that I use, give me NO SUITABLE REPLACEMENT, then proceed to tell me that I can't actually use older versions of the software because it won't run on the latest greatest Apple OS and I absolutely -must- be current to use the things that I actually rely on (ie, Xcode)?

This is pure ****ing madness. Pure. ****ing. Madness.

What the hell is wrong with options? O P T I O N S. You know, check boxes and drop down menus and stuff. What is wrong with giving us advanced UI pages that normal users don't have to use, so those of us who can't stand the bling bling blingety bling UI interfaces can actually still get to the things that matter to us?

"Our way or the highway" is ****ing arrogant, that's what it is. I have seen Apple go from a professional company making truly high end stuff, to a consumer company targeting everyone, to this ****ing fischer-price mammoth obsessed with building toys for people who can't even comprehend a ****ing folder on their desktop.

This **** needs to end. Give us our ****ing options, and stop being lazy ass programmers. I swear to god this company is going to implode like a goddam atomic bomb if they don't smarten the **** up soon.

Very funny. Sadly, also very true.

Nothing wrong with the router itself. I find the Airport Extreme to be reliable. The only times I had to reboot it is if I have firmware updates and/or change some port forwarding settings. What people are discussing is the app to set-up and manage the router.

Right, I was more talking about the hardware itself.

If someone in this thread wants to sell me theirs, just PM me, we may be able to arrange something! :apple:

For people that can't seem to find their wireless clients and info, they are all listed in the little popup next to the big router icon. What might not be obvious if you have scrollbars hidden by default is that you can scroll down to see them all. Also not obvious is that you can hover over each of the listed clients to see their details (IP addresses, etc.)

On a different note, I can't believe they dropped so much functionality. No shared printers, no advanced tab, etc.

Version 6.0 is for those who don't know and don't even want to know what a DHCP client is. Version 5.x is for the remaining 2% of Apple's customer base. Tools are there for you to find them. If you are too lazy to search for ways to solve your problem, you can't expect everybody else to spend their time.

I don't understand the level of snobbery among the tech-blog followers. Not every body want to spend hours to figure out how to create a wireless network. How would you feel if you needed to read a manual every time you use a new device? Needing to read manuals to buy gas, to use an ATM, a toaster oven etc!
Is configuring Airport base stations using the classic app difficult? Whenever you have a new Airport device, on a Mac, the classic Utility will automatically detects it and guides you through it step by step in an easy question-based wizard. Nothing more simpler than that. Preventing user to access information, on the other hand, is not useful. A router must be able to list the devices that connect to it. The 6.0 app will not show devices connected to it via ethernet. That's like taking out your cars' speedometer to make it "simpler," but clearly not useful.

What's obviously missing is a list of devices connected via ethernet. This is a fundamental basic function for a router. If the 6.0 app had this, I wouldn't even bother with 5.6 as I kinda like the network map layout of 6.0.

My canon MX 870 printer doesn't get detected after the airport upgrade. Anyone else facing the same issue?

"weighs in at 14.13MB"

Did you know that software doesn't 'weigh' anything.

You might consider using the verb 'is' instead.

It is clearer and since it is way shorter than 'weighs in at' it saves money on shipping.

It seems to me that they simply realized that there was no need for an additional printer tab in the Airport Utility, where basically all you could do was just change the shared name. They didn't take away the actual, you know, sharing functionality.

I havent installed the update yet....I use my AE as an extender, and for streaming music into another room. It works perfectly, but I did have an updated printer driver yesterday.....So I will check it out on my iMac in a moment.

TC has been updated once since purchase, will have to check firmware numbers.

OS X is not becoming iOS.

Either everyone cannot be bothered to watch WWDC 2011 with Federighi explaining the stack differences or they see a UI lift from iOS and suddenly it's all about iOS.

By the way, iOS isn't even 64 bit yet. It's got a long way to go before ARM is 64 bit CPU through and through.

You're better off following the progress of LLVM/Clang and the Cocoa Frameworks to get an idea how both are being developed as complementary platforms to extend Apple across all markets.

I just set up a Time Capsule with an Airport Express as a repeater/extender. Now my MBA drops out every 15 minutes. Wifi still shows full signal but the internet simply stops working. Other computers still work fine and turning wifi on and off will make the internet work again. It's infuriating. I was hoping this update would fix it but it's still doing it. This used to happen when my old Macbook would connect to the Time Capsule so I'm assuming the issue is with Apple's routers and not the laptops themselves.

Anyone know away to fix this?
