Does anyone know if this update will work with Boot Camp for Windows 7? I recently did an nVidia update. Would the fan issue be fixed for that, as well? I only have Boot Camp since I play Star Trek Online and it has no support for Mac. It runs really well in Windows 7! The graphics are gorgeous but the fan goes crazy and gets insanely hot, even when just idle.

You know, I read up a lot and saw a lot of people complaining about various problems. I dove in anyway and haven't had near the issues that others have had. Actually, I haven't had any issues really. I'm not sure where you guys are getting your opinions, if they're based on people complaining, or if they're first hand experiences. Let me share mine with you though, my first hand experience.

I purchased the Retina model because I thought it'd be great for photography. I do photography, web design, photoshop, and 3d work on this computer. It's amazing and has worked great in all of those capacities. I use it while mobile, and I also connect it into a couple of monitors and use it as a work station. It has performed well, about as well as a highend laptop might. It may not perform as well as my workstation at work, but well, that's a workstation. It's beefy, it's got the room to be beefy, it's not trying to compact itself into a portable fashion.

I'm sorry that you feel the Macbook Retina is so crappy of a product, but some of us have found it to be successful. I enjoy this computer and have no regrets. I've had no issues that made me think this product is beta, or whatever.

Honestly it always seems to be people who don't own one, talking about all the issues they have.

SMC update

Looks like this SMC update has really fixed some problems. Skype is now not crashing, Safari feels a bit better (though this could be due to the reboot as well). I'll have to check if the wake from deep sleep issue is also fixed. What I don't understand why they took so long time. It was just few kilobytes, not many lines to code!

I now feel 10.8.3 would certainly make my rMBP an enjoyable machine!

Kudos To Apple

I have one of the affected late 2012 (Jan 2013) 15" MBP retina SanDisk SSD equipped models.

This was for some of us, a very frequent daily issue. Mine spun up the fans on & off hourly.

Kudos to Apple for taking this seriously and doing an excellent job of fixing it.

I've been testing mine over & over for an hour. I am now 100% certain it's fixed, as the iTunes "song" that we identified as one of many triggers to cause the fans to roar, no longer does it.

Now _this_ is a stellar example of Apple showing us they can still operate as efficiently as Apple Computer Inc. did when at its peak.

When my mac restarted ,the fans suddenly kicked in and lots of dust was blown out.
did this happen to anyone else ?!

Honestly it always seems to be people who don't own one, talking about all the issues they have.

There's this thing called the Apple store where you can 'test' apps and machines/laptops before you buy them. Might want to look into one...they seem to be everywhere.

Surely that should say "experiencing lower than usual frame rates in games?" I'm pretty sure the MacBook Pro wasn't designed to run Battlefield 3 at 400fps.

This isn't actually a rare issue. It is repeatable every single time. All you have to do is to put your MBP to sleep without the power cord plugged in and things will slow down dramatically after waking it up.

As someone who plays World of Warcraft, this happens EVERY SINGLE TIME. Normal frame rates at ultra would be around 40'ish, plus or minus. After waking up and running the game, frame rates would drop to 1-9 fps. The only fix is to shut down, reset the SMC, and reboot. That would last until the next time the computer went to sleep. I think I've reset the SMC about a hundred times since I bought this computer for that very reason.

This fix has been awaited for a very long time. I hope it works. I haven't yet tested it.

update

I feel that the 10.8.3 will be coming out very soon. I think this SMC update is part of the 10.8.3 -

I believe this firmware update is not intended to work with the 10.8.2 but for a short time apple can get away with it while they are pushing out the 10.8.3. It makes sense why they are took to long to push this firmware update out and we have not seen 10.8.3.

My only question would be at this point is. Has the beta tester been able to update to this new firmware update prior to us seeing it (b/c i've not seen anything about it), so they have been able to work with the new 10.8.3 with this smc firmware.

/shrug?

13 Inch ??

Where is the update for the 13in RMBP?
This issue is just as widespread on those machines too....

Been a lot of complaints about lags from Retina MacBook Pro owners in the 10.8.3 beta forums. I wonder if this will resolve a lot of their difficulties. Now just waiting for 10.8.3 itself.

This definitely helped with my Mission Control lag. It also fixed my PowerNap wake issue. It was slow to wake before. Now better. System fan has not revved up yet. But haven't done anything yet that would kick that off.

wow! took less than 5 secs to update and Safari seems so much better. only have issues when logging into my works webmail, (lag and what not), just tired it and it's gone!!!! perfect

Look what i got

yay

I do not know, how often i must repeat it. The GPU has no problem with the retina display resolution. It is a software (driver) problem.

No one is saying it has a problem with the resolution. The GPU is underpowered for many 'pro' application uses of the laptop...mainly higher end editing/compositing/after effects/etc.
