As part of OS X Lion released today, Apple includes Safari 5.1, an updated version of the company's Internet browser that supports a number of improvements, some of which are tied into Lion's new capabilities. But Apple has also pushed out Safari 5.1 for Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows, bringing some of the enhancements that don't rely on Lion to those platforms.
This update contains new features including:

- Reading List: Easily add webpages and links to your Reading List to browse when you have time.
- New Process Architecture: Safari has been re-engineered for improved stability and responsiveness.
- Resume: In the General pane of Safari preferences, you can now choose to launch Safari with the windows from your last browsing session.
- Better Privacy: A new Privacy pane in Safari preferences makes it easy to remove data that websites can leave on your system.

Other improvements include:

- Private AutoFill: Safari lets you fill out forms quickly while keeping your personal information private.
- Find Option: When you use Find, you can choose whether you want to search for text that contains or starts with the text that you type in the search field.
- Drag-and-drop Downloads: You can drag items out of the Downloads window in Safari, so you can easily place downloaded files on the Desktop.
- Advanced Web Technologies: Safari introduces support for full-screen webpages, media caching with the HTML5 application cache, MathML, Web Open Font Format, CSS3 Auto-hyphenation, CSS3 Vertical Text, CSS3 Text Emphasis, Window.onError, and Formatted XML files.
- New Extension APIs: Developers can take advantage of new Safari Extension support for popovers, menus, new event classes, and interaction with Reader.
Safari 5.1 for Snow Leopard requires Mac OS X 10.6.5 or later.

Apple has also released a minor Safari 5.0.6 update for Mac OS X Leopard, bringing several improvements related to WebSocket web applications, HTML5 <ruby> annotations, and display of content within frames on sites such as pandora.com.

Strange, I don't get this update for my Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I have all the latest updates for the OS.

By the way, why Safari is not in App Store? Why is positioned as "old fashion" download & install yourself application?

I actually used Safari when I was running Lion GM. It was so much faster. Off to try download it, hope that it performs just as good on 10.6.8. Holding off on Lion for now, happy with SL :)

I use Safari for Windows at work and noticed 2 problems right away. One is my scroll wheel on the mouse no longer scrolls the page and it also blew away my cache so I have to re-enter all passwords. Man that's annoying!

I had the same 'problem' here too and didn't get an update so I went ahead and downloaded it from Apple directly. Worked fine but the first reboot crashed and I only saw a grey screen (without Apple logo or activity indicator), so I had to cold-reboot?!

I downloaded it off Apple's site as well, but can't install it because it says it requires 10.6.8 (I am still on the 10.6.7). Is this also why it doesn't come up on the Software Update? Why does the article say it requires 10.6.5 for the installation?

Glad to see an update for SL users.

How likely is it that we'll see the 64 bit version of iTunes for 10.6?

I'm really looking forward to 10.7 but it looks like I won't be able to update for a couple months because of third party software and plugins that need updates for it.

I got Lion on my MBP13 but not using it on my Mac Pro because I really do miss Expose/Spaces (and don't like Mission Control/Launchpad). But what I do miss now is the new UI (iOS style scroll bars) and the new Mail app. Do you think the new Mail will come to SL as well just like Safari did?

why cant safari 5.1 for snow leopard have all the features like safari 5.1 on lion -.-

No, it won’t. OS X includes a lot of apps, Mail being a big one, that have never been available separately. (Safari is the exception.)

I’m a big Exposé fan so we’ll see how I adapt to Mission Control! I think I’ll get used to it. It does seem like an improvement over the many different things you had to learn and use separately before. But... new habits are never fun to acquire!

iTunes is updated is software update. not sure if it's exactly what you are referring to though...

I like the new reading list feature a lot. And is it just me, or is there a more "brushed metal" look to the toolbars and whatnot?

Not yet in the software update, but I can understand the delay, think about that tons of user are draining data from apple's server for their Lion right now.
