Apple today seeded the second beta of macOS Ventura 13.1 to its public beta testing group, allowing non-developers to try out the new features ahead of the software's release. The public beta comes two weeks after Apple released the first public beta.

Public beta testers can download the macOS 13.1 Ventura update from the Software Update section of the System Preferences app after installing the proper profile from Apple's beta software website.

macOS Ventura 13.1 introduces the Freeform app, which Apple has designed for creative collaboration. The app can be used for brainstorming, planning out ideas, jotting down notes, and more. Users can insert drawings, sticky notes, shapes, text boxes, photos, videos, PDFs, links, and other documents, with Freeform serving as a blank canvas.

Freeform "boards" can be shared with other people and discussed over FaceTime, with updates from all participants synced to everyone in real-time.

The update also introduces support for an updated Home app architecture that improves performance for smart home devices.

Endpoint Security

Known Issues

  • Third-party security products using the Endpoint Security API might lose Full Disk Access authorization and stop functioning, even though the product remains visible in System Settings. This issue doesn’t affect authorization granted via MDM. (100857507)
Workaround: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, select the security product, use the minus (-) button to remove, and then use the plus (+) button to re-add the affected security product. A system restart might be required to restore expected functionality.

Freeform

Known Issues

  • Can’t delete boards while offline, or if iCloud data is disabled for Freeform. (100294085)
Workaround: Go to Settings (System Setting on macOS) > Apple ID > iCloud, then in the Apps using iCloud section, toggle Freeform to On.
  • Adding or removing collaborators can fail while attempting to change share settings. (101186059)
Workaround: Close the share sheet and try to add or remove the participants again.
  • Inserting a sticky or a file might result in an unexpected error. (100883621)
    Workaround: Quit and relaunch Freeform.

TV App

Resolved in macOS Ventura 13.1 beta 2

  • Fixed: Play tracking (Up Next, and Top Shelf Update) won’t work for all platforms. (101258095)

Yes. Would be interested to hear if System Preferences has been updated/improved/reverted to the old version in 13.1.
Just to reiterate when you open system preferences be sure to take advantage of VIEW pulldown menu. That way you can access some system settings directly even if that are nestled in the system settings hierarchy.

Every AV suite has told us not to upgrade to Ventura. I hope this fixes it.

Hopefully 13.1 will fix the issue that files cannot be deleted. 13.0.1 doesn't fixed it yet.
No problems here. Time for more troubleshooting. You know, under what specific circumstances is it happening? Files in use? Permission issues, bad drive. Oh I don’t know, hard for me to say cause I’ve never seen the issue

It started immediately after the Ventura upgrade. Files closed, mostly when they are in my Downloads folder. If I move them to my Desktop I can delete them. Also via terminal it is fine. And via Option + Command + Delete combo. Also using Forklift it is fine. So I assume it is something with the Finder.

see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254322435 Also try booting in safe mode if what below suggests doesn't work.

I had the same issue after installing Ventura 13.0. I went to > Force Quit and hit "Relaunch" on the Finder app. It solved the problem for me. Will keep monitoring to see if the fix lasts.

Tried that one, but nope. Not working here. But thanks for the link! :)

Not common, but maybe its a map issue with APFS? Try run a first aid (disk utility) on the SSD volume in recovery mode before you fully boot up MacOS to see if anything is amiss.

Just want to say: thank you for always sharing helpful information in regards to things like this.

So tiresome to see the same posts about the Settings app every single article, as if the old Preferences layout was some perfect implementation.

Yeah! I tried it after reading the support post on Apples Forum. And for my suprise it is working now! I am still a bit cautious, but it survived two reboots now.
Thank you very much! :)

This beta has broken my Macbook Pro 14". Now nothing (except Safari) opens but just brings up a terminal window.
How about simply booting into recovery mode and reinstall MacOS which should be this beta.

Maybe. Some people also have downloads backed up to google drive or iCloud. Google drive totally sucked up until the last update was trying to back up files that weren’t in any backup folder. I had to delete some google system folders then re sign in to google drive. Then it would start again in a couple of days. Seems to be fixed now

The fact that it seems to be in one folder, that is where I would start

It happened in other folder too, but not all the time. That is what was really strange. But doing First Aid via Recovery mode fixed it - for now.

I've been using that just for the non-grouped alphabetical order. I hadn't realized it also showed nested preferences yet. Thanks!

I'm having an issue with this update and beta 1 with my external drive not connecting to my Mac via external dell display, anyone else having issues with this? I've tried different ports and updating the software but nothing seems to work. Bit of a pain cause my Time Machine backup is now getting quite out of date.

MacBook Pro M1 2020
Have a significant frame drops / UI lagging in widgets menu (after clicking “edit widgets”). It was even on first betas, stable version, and now nothing have changed. The same problem on iMac M1
