I'm now seriously considering the BenQ PD3220U. It's 32" with a fully functioning stand — matte coating etc.

And..
At MSRP of $1199.99, the upcharge just for 5k on the ASD (spec'd to match with Matte + Stand)...

is $1100 ?

Nearly 2x just to go from 4k to 5k (and have a smaller 27" screen also)

Step down to the 27" BenQ and the upcharge to go 5k with ASD becomes $1350

The BenQ has a lot lower resolution both in number of pixels and even more so in pixel density, which makes it very awkward to run with Retina-targeting macOS.

So it would simply be useless to me and not worth its price.

Your own priorities can very well and legitimately differ from mine – for instance if you're mostly working on photos and the actual resolution matters less to you because you're looking at scaled images most of the time anyway.

But to me it's primarily about the actual resolution, both the much higher pixel count (70% more pixels than the 4k) and also the physical pixel density (58% higher on the Studio display) because I'm using text above all and correct UI element scaling matters to me.

I've not looked at the BenQ but it probably doesn't have the Thunderbolt and charging abilities either, or decent speakers, or a metal enclosure since practically all other monitors are just cheaply wrapped in plastic. Which usually also means a more or less wobbly stand which is really annoying while typing.

"But it's so much cheaper!" may still not mean that it's actually better value for money when the value is even less than it would need to be for the lower price.

Yup, that pretty much sums up my thinking. :)

Where’s the comparison to other devices like MacBook Pro?

As expected, the quality remains crap compared to other 1080P webcams. Let’s not diminish the facts by pretending “oh it’s good enough, no one cares about high quality video anyway.”
Probably because you didn’t see the video

I couldn't give 2 s—ts about the camera. Also I don't think anyone was expecting a miracle. 27" isn't a great size(subjective opinion), the panel is dated. The stand it comes with is useless and limiting. If you upgrade the stand and the matte coating it becomes too expensive for what it is — imho. I'm now seriously considering the BenQ PD3220U. It's 32" with a fully functioning stand — matte coating etc. It's 4k, but nonetheless. And I'm pissed, as I would much more prefer to keep my home setup Apple-only.
27” is great for most uses but ok, anyway you can’t use 32” with 4K or even 5K for true retina 2X while keeping a big user space. 5K is 2,5k on retina. 4K is terrible at retina and believe me I have one if you need work space you must use scaled resolution.
PD3220U is 32” 4K so it is utter crap, you like it good, but you are not objective since the Studio Display panel is very good and with good 600nits And better blacks, it is not LG 5K or iMac panel.
Studio Display is for who wants macOS integration and features, perfect retina scaling, very fast ports. You can‘t compare those two products.

I do want all that :) But 27" is too small for my needs, so I would need 2 studio displays. With matte coating that adds up. I understand where the BenQ lacks, but it doesn't cost as much either. I'm a bit curious about that Samsung M8. I'd like to see it in person. Any thought on that one?

Same boat here. Apple is simply not getting my money on this one. I looked at the BenQ but got the 32" LG 4K Ultrafine w/ the VESA desk stand since the specs weren't that much different and it was only $750 with tax. Is it as bright and crisp and great to look at as my 27" retina iMac? Nope. Is the larger size a bonus? Yes. Did I save a LOT of money and still happily get my work done? Absolutely. (And why did I wait so long to get such an adjustable swingable/rotatable/desk clutter-killing stand? This is probably my favorite part since we use the display for watching movies in my home office. Flip it around toward the couch, and bingo!)

So the inbuilt camera has issues. Are you buying a monitor or are you hoping to see yourself in glorious 5K? Are using it as a workspace or gasbagging all day? Are you all aspiring TV/youtoob personalities? This is not a failing keyboard or lack of port level problem. Buy it, or don’t.

I can’t believe people are still trying to make comparisons between this display and all the other "options" that have unfulfilled Mac user requirements since Retina was introduced. That includes the beautiful but luxury (for non pro users) 6K.

Yeah this whole thing has thrown me into an odd state of limbo. I've enjoyed my 2015 27" iMac Retina, though I came from a 30" Apple Cinema Display, so the 27" size, though crisp and beautiful, was a little smaller than I wanted. The price for a 32" XDR was just not gonna happen. Then this new Studio Display … hmm … had it been a 30"-32" (a dumbed down XDR) for say $2-2.5K I probably would have taken the plunge. But I just couldn't make myself spend $1600 for the same thing I have, plus the M1 Mac mini I also ordered. So, I've gone the opposite route and purchased a 32" LG 4K Ultrafine for $750 w/ tax. It's probably a carry-me-over until I can afford something better … assuming the XDR's come down in price on the lightly-used market. The LG's build quality is meh. The brightness is OK. The UI/font crispness is a step back. But I really love the larger size, and with its very small bezels, it's perfect on my desk. Plus it came with a VESA swivel stand that is super handy. I'll probably never go back to a fixed stand. Resolution wise, it kills the 30" ACD that I loved for many years. If I don't lean in close, I really don't see the pixels … it looks "retina" … kind of. Admittedly my heart sinks a little when I look over at my aging 27" iMac in all its bright 5K glory and crisp UI. But when I get to work, the LG is doing the job, and knowing I didn't pay very much has its own satisfaction. I guess value is in the eye of the spender? ;)

Exactly..good comment.

I REALLY wanted to like the Studio Monitor (Coming from a 27" Cinema Display (sold years ago) and still use an Apple Cinema Display 20-inch (Matted) Aluminum monitor AND a 27" Thunderbolt Monitor (glossy with eye strain issues)....but...I have to settle with my $550 27 LG 4K "Matted" monitor. No glare, not as good of course as the Studio Monitor, but I can't handle glossy light reflections of the monitor glass anymore.

You can tell that Apple looked at the pricing of the past monitors to determine today's pricing. If you compare it to their old monitor pricing (like the 20-inch retailing back in the day at $1,299 back in 2004, then the New Studio Monitor is by far a good deal at starting at $1,599.. but I picked it up the 20" at used place a few years ago for $85.

To get a some-what non-glare Apple monitor today, I would have to pay about over $2,000 (after tax) for it.

$550 or over $2,000 if it is Apple...sounds to me not in "limbo", but "a black hole" comparison..

Nice! What sort of work do you do on it?

Or just buy a 'real' webcam, that inherently will give you more image options than the cropped Center Stage 'feature'.

As did everyone. It wasn’t until after iPhone that Apple started offering glossy screens, and the MBP was first offered glossy in 2008, with no matte option. It was January 2009 when they again offered the matte as an “upgrade” on the 17” only, then later to the 15”.
When you say, as did everyone, you meant there was a choice right? I remember having a choice, and the person who was helping me said get the matte.

So I'm assuming they are still working on this issue as it's been 2 weeks and still no update. Wondering if this will be the final update or we will see yet another beta?
