Apple has released a Security Update today for Mac OS X Server 10.5, Mac OS X 10.5.8, Mac OS X Server 10.6, Mac OS X 10.6.4 ...

Does this mean that OS X 10.4.11 doesn't need the update or that it is no longer supported and so, with no update, will continue to be vulnerable?

The list of OSes which are affected or potentially-affected by the previous .PDF exploit is available at http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/275247. OS X seems not to have been affected by that exploit, and I expect this patch is for some other vulnerability. It’s interesting to note that the list spans a wide range of _nix and embedded OSes which use the FreeType 2 libraries, but the vulnerability is not universal.

10.4 hasn't received any security updates since 10.6 shipped. It will be vulnerable to any holes patched in OS X since 10.6's launch.

Dear god

I got the grey screen of death after updating

Me too!! What am I supposed to do now? Im stuck in my Windows Partition till I can call tomorrow. Any news, or updates for those of us sufferings from unbootable systems, let me know!

stuffed up my system after updating both security and graphics.

cant open any files unless from within application menu... skype crashes everytime it loads, probably other issues...

After Update - Computer Slow

I have to attribute the following to this security update, because not soon after the update I noticed -

Applications taking a long time to open, sometimes a minute when it use to be seconds. I've tried opening everything from LR3, Excel, Word, Bento, etc and its taking a long time. Tried resetting SMC didnt help. I just booted into safe mode and then rebooted normal and it appears to have helped, but my lovely i7 MBP 15" with 8gb is slower than my old imac.

This sucks!

Now it's slow... :(

Yep. same here too on my 13" 2010 MBP.

Zooming in and out of PDFs in Preview or Acrobat is now painful.
Anyone else having this issue?

I ended up dropping off my Mac to the local apple store for repair. Even at the store they could not run a diagnostics, no response from the mbp. When I pick it up, I will post an update. It might not be a bad idea to contact apple regarding the update, perhaps they will help you out since it happened after the update?

Is that really true - OSX 10.4, only a few years old, is now a discontinued and unsupported OS?

I moved away from Windows precisely so to avoid endless software/OS updates. Now it looks like I *have* to buy new versions of OSX every 2 years, as well as updating parallels, etc etc, just to stay safe.

Surely this can't be right?

Put in the stock RAM and retry. If you upgraded the RAM yourself then it may no longer be supported :apple:

Yeah, just to stay safe . Like with TimeMachine on Snow Leopard. That feature alone was worth the $29 disc. Move back to windows if you don't like continued improvement, innovation, and an OS that smoothly keeps up with the hardware.

Well you dont *have* to upgrade anything; (every two years).
buuuut with the way hardware changes alot, most OS' dont keep up with it.

But it good be said backwards about Apple with their hardware implementation (Older tech, newer OS..etc).

I have a few systems that I manage that are running 10.4.11 Tiger and 10.5.8 Leopard and the rest on SL.

I could update them all to one OS but I like having the variety so theres no need to change them if I dont really want to. They all run just as fine as the next system.

I know. I know. The older hardware issue... I prefer a OSX running on C2duos than Windows7 running on a fancy iWhatever. Although I'm not coding video either. Mostly pdfs, docs, statistic programs, graphing programs, music streaming, etc.

I actually would be fine not upgrading for another 4 years (so by then an 8 year old processor technology). I do, however, expect to upgrade my OS during that time.

Safari crashes

I seem to be unlucky! Safari has crashed 8 times since this new security update it had not crashed before or once in the last year. I have not installed any other software or updates.

Safari seems OK here on MR, but when I go to access my mail at AOL.COM it hangs then crashes.

Has anybody else have a similar problem? I did run disk utility and repair permissions twice but I have had no improvement.

I cannot prove that it is the update but I know something is not right.

G4 1.5 PowerBook with 2G of memory OSX 10.5.8

The problem is just that Apple are no longer offering security patches for Tiger. If you want a secure MacOS you have to upgrade. An OS with known and unpatched attack vectors is not useful.

I just reinstalled Leopard with the updates and Safari is fine again, it seems snappier :)

Stock 2009 Mac Pro quad core, 10.6.4 here.

I get an error when downloading? Says the update was unable to be installed?
