What questions do you have ?

Well I am curious about the details of the graphical update. I've read Valve's statement but I get the feeling there is more to it then that. Do you have any details on other areas the update has addressed that you can share with us? I'm strictly speaking driver design and implementation.

Faster, Stronger, Higher

iMac 21.5" core 2 duo October 2009, 3.06 GHz.

Per the above, I got a big increase from the software update. Unexpected.

I just tested out portal on my MacBookPro3,1 (2008 model?) and it didn't really show much improvement, but what it did show was it crashing finder and restarting while leaving the game running in the background.

installed it and restarted still have graphic problems-Playing portal the walls seem glitchy-btw this is late 09 mac mini

So what happens when a driver update pushes out a higher frame rate?

1.) Most gamers will be happy.
2.) Your Mac needs more power.
3.) It limits the life span of the GPU.
4.) You won't be happy for long after all?

Time for a Power Management change for the affected Mac's?

Its good to see that there is an improvement, but I am not surprised, drivers make a big difference which is why I hope Apple releases updated ones frequently.. there are usually updates every few months on nividia, at least on the windows side..

Absolutely excellent to see Apple acknowledging the work that Valve has done for the Mac platform.

Yep, everything is faster. Games run better, OSX feels less sluggish, everything feels and performs like it should. Bout damn time you release this update Apple!

Wow! The new graphics update made a HUGE difference in OpenGL testing on my Mac Pro 1,1! My graphics card is a PC version of the 512MB ATI Radeon 4870 that I flashed myself. Here are the before and after OpenGL tests:

After:

That's a 50% improvement almost across the board!

I also installed the Snow Leopard Graphics Update on my MacBOOK Pro (Core i7). It made virtually zero difference in the OpenGL test scores. Weird.

THANK GOD

My 1.5-year-old top-of-the-line iMac can now play Starcraft II on something other than the lowest possible graphics settings. I can now play everything on "high"... havn't tried Ultra yet

24" iMac
3.06GHz C2D
4GB RAM
NVIDIA 8800GS

Well just played Starcraft 2. It's still laggy on high settings but is playable on medium so it's an improvement. I guess the machine (see sig) can't handle the high settings, looks frigging gorgeous though! Still not bad on medium.

Where do you find this OpenGL to run tests?

Download it from here:

It isn't particularly accurate given that for every one good way of coding for OpenGL there is almost an assurance that some programmer will choose the 4 other ways that are absolutely crappy in terms of performance - you're better off doing a real world test like running Media Encoder CS5 with an OpenCL machine to spot the improvements in encoding time or running a game that is graphics intensive to give the OpenGL improvement a major work out.

The improvement is across the board; the performance isn't just in the drivers but also in the OpenGL implementation itself - all of the drivers and OpenGL/OpenCL frameworks have been updated;the 'changelog' to me sounds more like 'high profile changes' rather than mentioning every possible change that has occurred within the update. This isn't new to Apple btw, their Combo update changelog never lists every single update - some of them only list something like 6 updates when end user testing spot bugs that have been fixed but not accounted for in the changelog.

It can

I have the new i7 2.66 MBP 17" with 8GB ram , Nvidia 330M and the 512GB SSD and it plays the game on high just fine under Windows 7 bootcamp. The machine you have is very similar to mine- should easily play SC2 under high settings. Better graphics drivers are still needed in OSX, however. The limiting factor for your graphics isn't your machine, its your software.
