I'm still a little baffled why Apple sells monitors, and why anyone would buy them given the competition out there for really nice displays for much less than the $1600 - $5000 of Apple models...

As a photographer who's pretty fussy about color and post-processing my image files, my Studio Display is outstanding.

How long have you owned and used yours? Are you a photographer?

Except Apple has never been in the "good enough" business, and likely never will be.

Magic Mouse charging has entered the chat. 🤣

I've heard it said that the Magic Mouse cannot be operated while being charged which is why Apple put the Lightning port on the bottom (rather than, say, the front) to ensure that people could not use it during charging.

Now one can use the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad while charging, so if the above is true, it is interesting why only the mouse has this limitation.

As a graphic designer, Apple displays are cream of the crop for displays. You really won't get the same experience from another monitor. Even the LG Ultrafine lineup was subpar while being pricey, and it had Apple's blessing.

I've used Apple monitors for 20 years and still have a 30" Cinema Display that still works as a status board in our office. It's 14 years old.

We've also been through a bunch of LG, Samsung, Viewsonic, you-name-it....displays and they just don't last as long. 3-4 years tops.

If you don't want an Apple monitor don't buy one. But there are plenty of people who recognise their value.

Depends on what ‘competition’ you’re referring to; I don’t recall many Mac-friendly 5K displays with a webcam, advanced microphones, speakers and premium metal enclosure on the market…

Why, that is an easy answer. Because the other non Apple models don’t even come close in quality and ease of use of the Apple Monitors. Just love my Apple Studio Display and think it was fairly priced, especially when Costco had them on sale. Nothing can touch it outside of a higher end Apple monitor.

So now we are finding out why the Studio Display has all that power under the hood. This update adds Pro Display Calibration. Wonder what's coming next...

Where the h-e-double hockeys sticks is the new display?! Someone send out an APB.
What are you looking for in a new display? I suspect if you actually owned and used an ASD, you wouldn't make this statement.

So does anyone actually have any input on the update? Is there any noticeable changes?

UPDATE: It is working again. I have no idea what the issue was and all I did was unplug both ends of the thunderbolt cable a few times and reboot my computer a few times. So if anyone is having issues, I guess just give that a try and give it time to fix itself.

Yes. I do. Apparently the update bricked mine. Anyone else? Opened up a case with Apple support. Should get more info tomorrow.

Again? Because Apple ecosystem, because of USB-C hub at 10Gbps, integrated mics, webcam and especially because it is 5K retina without scaling. And no 4K is not the same.

The main reason why Apple now makes a display is because people have been asking for them to do so. People often buy things due to aesthetics. Nothing compares to Apple's design styles. There's a reason so many companies rip off Apple designs. Their monitors are also known for incredible build quality. You don't get light leakage and crappy plastic like you do with other monitors.

The killer feature of the Apple Studio Display is that it always turns on instantly. Having had dozens of monitors over the years with Macs and PC's, this is the only monitor I've ever seen that never has trouble waking up. Too often I've had to reboot the computer or turn the monitor on and off or unplug/re-plug the monitor just to get it to come on.

What's wrong with the Studio Display/XDR that we need a new one?
Well, to be honest. I'd like them to release one that is capable of handling an alternate HDMI input as well as Thunderbolt. I have a Windows Desktop and Mac Laptop. I'd really like to be able to plop the laptop down on one end and have the Studio Display be either a second Windows machine display or a second macbook pro screen depending on what I'm doing. It would be an instant buy for me if Apple offered that option.

I (and others) have been doing this since Day 1 of the Apple Studio Display. There are a variety of manners to do this. My personal preference is to use a TB4 cable with a magnetic connector at the source-end. I regularly switch sources from my MacBook Pro, Windows PC, Windows laptop, Steamdeck, etc.

It can not be used cos the cable sticks in the bottom!
Not cos of the charging process

Same here, bricked the display

It’s actually worse than that. The mouse is deactivated while charging. If you run your finger along the sensor on the bottom while it’s charging, you’ll notice the mouse does not move on screen. So even if you wanted to use it the hard way, it won’t respond.

Very odd. I just got a second firmware update for the Studio Display. I’m not sure if it’s because the OS didn‘t realize it had already been installed or Apple released a second version, I don’t know. I installed it a second time and it installed fine. Has anyone else gotten two prompts to install it?
