I don't know if I'd ever use induction charging on my AirPods case, but I guess I'd probably spend $10 more for the option.

More fool me.

This whole lineup is so confusing, and it’s really emblematic of the absolute mess that Tim Cook’s Apple creates out of otherwise really simple product lines. There should be two AirPods: AirPods (cheaper, basic, good) and AirPods Pro (more expensive, more features, better). The need to create a ($10!) cheaper Lightning-only charging case just makes this such a mess and will likely be a minor-but-common headache to every Apple store support person (not mention anyone who is de facto tech support for their tech-illiterate relative) who has to answer questions from a user about why their case isn’t working when they put it on a MagSafe/wireles charger. Just…why?

Why?

You see store

Oooo $10 more for the option for magsafe

in head.. but i don’t have MagSafe.

Buy $10 just in case anyway

in head later… I guess i might as well get MagSafe charger that apple sells.

a long time later… hmm my iPhone doesn’t have MagSafe, but i have this magsafe puck… guess its time to upgrade

// Now they price it $20-30 cheaper

customer: Ooo $20 saving.

Apple loses more than $20 becuase they didnt upsell you on any of their new features that create the ecosystem.. additionally they were able to now perceive the more expensive magsafe as “cheaper” or a “deal” becuase they anchored the lower price item so high

Why would anyone buy these? Just spend 10 extra bones and get wireless charging, it'll still have a Lightning port!

Whatever the actual reasons... I bet the official reason to the public will be something like:

We at Apple saw that being giving customers a choice to purchase the version appropriate to their lifestyle, we were able to accommodate a segment of the population with their specific needs. Needs that would further provide for a slightly greener earth. By not incorporating the 2 grams of copper wire and qi wireless charging technology in cases where they would not be used, we are able to reduce our carbon footprint that much more.

“You no longer have to deal with wireless charging!”

This is their new rationale for everything. They’re hardly trying anymore.

“You don’t have to deal with a headphone jack!”

“You don’t have to deal with RCS!”
