Apple today released tvOS 10.2, marking the second major update to the tvOS operating system that was released in September of 2016. tvOS 10.2 has been in testing since January 24, with Apple having seeded six betas to developers before releasing the software to the public.

The tvOS 10.2 update can be downloaded on the fourth-generation Apple TV using the Settings app. Go to System --> Software Update to install. For those who have automatic software updates turned on, the Apple TV will be upgraded to tvOS 10.2 automatically.

According to Apple's beta release notes, tvOS 10.2 introduces improved scrolling behavior, allowing tvOS users to scroll through large lists of information more quickly. A longer swipe on the Siri remote activates the new scrolling mode, and a swipe on the right side of the remote allows users to navigate specific indexes.

While Apple's release information only focused on the new scrolling mode, the update also likely includes other small feature tweaks under-the-hood bug fixes and performance improvements.

Does this mean we have 2 or even 3 new ways to scroll? Guh.

I hope they provided a feature to disable voiceover, getting real tired of having my son trigger voiceover and then hearing him shout at Siri to turn voice over off every other morning.

oh you need the siri remote? i threw that across the room a long time ago, i think it might be under the fridge. worst piece of engineering ive ever seen in my life for a remote. did they even R&D it?

doesnt matter how many updates it gets, wont ever fix the problem of the touch panel always being active without a way to disable it

Any insight into any of the other iOS improvements such as APFS make it into this tvOS update?

Just wanted to show some love to the AppleTV update thread as the other updates are in 10 pages of comments!

An easy update would enable the touch to only respond after you click the big button first. That's a pretty simple update. Right?

for some reason my household has not had these problems. while i'm not a fan of the remotes symmetrical shape (i had to put a rubberband on one end), i love the touch surface for swiping. way faster and more precise than button cycling.

Are... you looking to recycle it? I'd gladly pay shipping to have a backup if mine stops working (again).

HEVC 265 videocodec support please!
You may already be aware, and of course it will be preferable to have the whole system be able to decode it, but VLC for Apple TV plays any h265 or x265 I throw at it. I upload through the browser interface and it works perfectly, even offering to download subtitles.

Really happy with my 4th gen Apple TV especially with Plex but this update is next to nothing, scrolling is fine as it is.

Also, Plex will play the videos, although it uses the computer (server) processor to transcode the movie. HEVC support should be mandatory in 2017 tho.

Me either. I make a habit of not putting the remote down on the couch which is easier to scrub accidentally.

The remote didn't get an update as far as I can tell.

I was expecting that with the changes to the remote that it might have got a firmware update, but it didn't.
