Apple today released tvOS 12.2.1, the sixth update to the tvOS 12 operating system designed for fourth and fifth-generation Apple TV models. tvOS 12.2.1 comes a little over two weeks after the release of tvOS 12.2.

tvOS 12.2.1 is a free update that can be downloaded over the air through the Settings app on the Apple TV by going to System --> Software Update. Apple TV owners who have automatic software updates turned on will be upgraded to tvOS 12.2.1 automatically.

It's not clear what's been fixed in tvOS 12.2.1, but given that it's a minor 12.x.x update, it likely addresses bugs and other issues that were found in tvOS 12.2.

Apple does not provide release notes for tvOS updates, making it difficult to determine what might be new or improved in the operating system.

The prior update, tvOS 12.2, introduced new AirPlay 2 features, allowing users to ask Siri to play specific media on an Apple TV or third-party TV (support coming soon) from an iOS device.

I bet they improve nothing. I bet what is actually happening is they are collecting data for what you watch and how long you watch etc... same with phones. They want info.

It is odd to see a tvOS bumped like this prior to an iOS bump. e.g. Usually the .x tvOS update arrives after the corresponding iOS .x update.

To me that says it was something non-minor or at least something important (to Apple) to fix.

Since tvOS 12.2 my Apple TV 4K stopped connecting via CEC with A/V and TV not turning devices on/off anymore. I unplugged and reset HDMI cables to no avail. Issue persist with 12.2.1

Well that must be frustrating.
[doublepost=1554920126][/doublepost]Maybe this fixes something with the iOS remote? I’ve noticed since 12.2, and then updating the remote app that it never remembers my TV anymore.

Marco Arment spoke about this on a recent Accidental Tech Podcast. I think a few episodes back. If you check the show notes of recent episodes, you can go listen. One week he spoke about the problem which sounds exactly the same as yours, the next week he read out solutions provided by listeners.

CEC is notoriously unreliable though.

Remote keyboard (from the notification) still seems borked (i.e. the wheel just keeps spinning while it tries to connect). Has been for some time now. While it works as it should from the Remote app, I much preferred to just interact with the notification instead of diving into the app everytime.

Just me or are others experiencing this as well?

I'm having the exact same issue. So glad to know I'm not alone...

iOS remote and lockscreen widget seem more stable now? Volume rocker works consistently, I have contextual forward/back buttons (at least on the lockscreen) that don’t get confused or disappear, same with volume on the lockscreen. I can actually tap and then scrub through video on control center remote again as well. I had a ton of problems on .2

Don’t know if it will last this time.

There’s still no contextual skip forward/back buttons on the control center remote anymore, I think they may have been removed which is a bummer.

Works fine for me, fwiw

I've got hundreds of apps on my Apple TV and lately its download speed has sometimes slowed to a crawl, but never as bad as this morning. Using Spectrum Cable today my iPad Pro downloaded at its usual 350 Mbps while the Apple TV at times was less than 1 Mbps! When it finally got up to around 10 Mbps I checked to see if there was a tvOS update, and happily there was. I downloaded and installed tvOS 12.2.1 and now my Apple TV is back to normal, almost as fast as my iPad Pro running iOS 12.2!

For me, this is a HUGE update. I've always been using my Apple TV far more than my Cable box since the day it came out back in 2007. It's nice that it is running perfectly again! By the way, here's how I've set mine up over the past dozen years:

I thought you were kidding when you said at the start that you had hundreds of apps installed. I would venture a guess that you have more apps installed on your Apple TV than 99% of Apple TV owners. Wow.

I can tell ya it’s one of those updates that make the UI slow and push you towards ordering a new Apple TV. Things that were snappy last year are already not desirable to use I have 5 Apple TV’s and all but one that has not need updated are like this. Thanks Apple I’m sure you don’t slow down devices.

I actually spoke with Apple today regarding a minor issue where episodes are not incrementing after playback. They said it was a known issue... maybe this update (12.2.1) fixes that? Testing now.

Edit: Yes, 12.2.1 seems to have fixed issue. At least that is one thing they fixed.

No UI lag noticed on my AppleTV4k.
