Apple today released tvOS 16.5, the fifth major update to the tvOS 16 operating system that initially came out last September. Available for the Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD, tvOS 16.5 comes over a month after the launch of tvOS 16.4.

tvOS 16.5 can be downloaded using the Settings app on the Apple TV by going to System > Software Update. If you have automatic software updates turned on, you will be upgraded to tvOS 16.5 automatically.

With tvOS 16.5, Apple is introducing a multi-view sports feature that will allow Apple TV users to stream up to four sports games simultaneously with a four-quadrant screen layout. Multi-view sports works with MLB Friday Night Baseball games and MLS Season Pass matches. The grid view can be enabled by selecting the grid icon above the timeline bar and then choosing the "More Matches" button, and volume for one game can be played at once, with swapping available using the Apple TV Remote.

There are no other notable features in tvOS 16.5 that we know of, but Apple will outline the changes in the update in its tvOS support document.

Since I bought a 2022 128 GB Apple TV, I have not been able to play Apple TV+ shows or purchased movies in Dolby Atmos with a pair of 2018 HomePods. It was working fine with the 2017 Apple TV. What is annoying is that if I select the TV speakers as output which are also Dolby Atmos compatible then ATV+shows and purchased movies play in Dolby Atmos without any issues. Apple is aware of the bug and is working on a fix; at least that's what support told me...in February :(

It will be nice to see the Friday Night Baseball games together if they are on at the same time. I thought they planned the schedule so you had an East Coast game and West Coast game. That doesn't seem to happen this year.

I had to reboot my ATV twice today as it got stuck on the ESPN+ and Paramount+ Apps. Which is not unusual. My Roku never ever needs rebooting. My ATV 4K is the most unreliable streamer I have ever used. And for some reason the most affected by slow internet or Wi-Fi.

Interesting. I’ve had completely the opposite experience and replaced various Rokus with AppleTV 4Ks (one of each of the 3 different 4K models) for that reason. If my experience hadn’t been dramatically better with the first ATV 4K, I’d definitely not have spent the $. I’m not saying I’ve never had to reboot the ATV but it’s pretty rare and I use mine almost constantly when I’m home - whether watching broadcast TV via the Channels DVR, listening to Apple Music during the day as I work or streaming a movie etc - and they’ve been rock solid. The last time I had to reboot one was after the last update. Not sure that it would cause what you’re experiencing but the two that get the most use are wired. I avoid wireless with streaming devices if at all possible.
