Apple today released tvOS 16, the newest version of the tvOS operating system that is available for the Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD.

The tvOS 16 update can be downloaded over the air through the Settings app on the ‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌ by going to System -> Software Update. ‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌ owners who have automatic software updates turned on will be upgraded to ‌tvOS 16 automatically.

Apple TV software updates are more minor in scale than updates for other platforms like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but there are a few new features in tvOS 16 to be aware of.

The update brings game controller support for the the Nintendo Joy-Cons and the Nintendo Pro Controller. When Matter launches, the Apple TV with tvOS 16 installed will support it, for improved interoperability between smart home accessories from different companies.

tvOS 16 brings cross-device connectivity, a feature that lets developers integrate Apple TV apps with iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch apps to unlock new experiences on Apple TV. Multi-user profiles have also been improved through the use of a shared keychain, which means users won't need to sign in and choose their profile when launching an Apple TV app.

Apparently this update fixes the audio problems the device has, where if you fast forward a video the audio stops and you have to restart the device sometimes to get it back. Their is a long thread related to the issue in Apples support forums, I'm affected so hope this fixes it as it's very annoying.

Anyone with iPhones with calibrated personalized spatial audio can tell if it syncs with tvOS as well? Articles only said it would with iPads and Macs.

If you're coming from the beta there's no update, it's the same build as the latest beta.
I actually had turned off my beta updates because it kept breaking things with my HomePods. However I just turned on beta updates and the update was right there. Strange.

But thanks!

I thought Apple drop the HD model? I thought that was legacy now. I’ll see if there’s an update. :D

I wonder if this updates fixes the two issue I have with the 4K 2021 model. 1. The Dolby Atmos audio stuttering/dropout issue; and the darkening of the picture in DV after coming out of a pause that goes to the Apple screen saver;

Trying to update my Apple tv HD but it keeps crashing. It gets about half way through and then it crashes. On try number 5 now. Maybe it because it is a legacy device now.
failed on 5th try. Giving up.

Does the update fix the dolby atoms issues where you won’t hear anything unless you restart especially on the apps?

After the update on my Apple TV 4K I can no longer turn up or down the volume from my iPhone using the remote app. 😞

Anyone try the iOS 16 remote with TVos16? I’m unable to change TV volume using my iPhone volume buttons. It worked perfectly with iOS15/ TVOS15 before…
Yes 100% doing that for me I came here to see if others were affected. Can no longer change tv volume. Guess I have to go to the physical remote.
