Apple yesterday released Version 2.1 of HP Printer Drivers for Mac OS X v10.6, adding Snow Leopard-compatible drivers for a number of HP printers and multifunction devices.

Complete information on Snow Leopard-compatible drivers can be found in Apple's support document on the issue, which has been updated to include the newly-added HP drivers, which are marked with an asterisk.

The download weighs in at 381.5 MB and requires the new Mac OS X 10.6.1 update.

now they need to release epson printer driver updates that enable additional features for the older models.

WTF? My LJ 1012 has not worked since upgrading to Snow Leopard. "New" HP drivers are same version as old ones.

For anyone interested, Gutenprint released version 5.2.4 of its open source drivers (SL has version 5.2.3). Get it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/gutenprint-5.2/5.2.4/gutenprint-5.2.4.dmg/download

Other good open source drivers:
-hpijs http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs
-pxlmono http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/pxlmono

Note: as I said, these are -> OPEN SOURCE <- drivers, so you may not get all the fancy features, but they do support a lot of printers that the official Apple/Manufacturer drivers may not for basic printing.

can anyone scan?

Hi gang, HP Color LaserJet 2840 (all in one) here...still can't scan...can anyone scan using SL? I know the support document shows an asterisk next to this model...but still shows print only capability...this is what was possible before...so I am wondering if this was just not updated. Please advise. Thx.

my HP P1006 still not supported...will have to find an open-source driver.

x2...I hope you can find something, or I can...I print off tons of stuff each week for work, so I don't guess I will be getting snow leopard until this is resolved...:(

Glad this came through. Need to scan a bunch of stuff this weekend and my HP wasn't supported in the least bit before. Also has updated drivers for a few other printers that were working.

Thanks Apple. Now go on and make everyone happy.

Same here - my personal P1006 I managed to get working JUST, although it crashes most of the time.
Problem was worse with the P1005 I set up for a client. The workaround was to download the older 1.0.4 drivers which the PPD works around half the time - crashes on any heavy graphics (especially on the test page).

This is pretty ridiculous, considering this is the current range of HP printers that you find on their website. HP's mac commitment is just lame.

I'm thinking maybe HP just make sh*tty printers in general - i've had laserjet 1022n's crash when windows computers send medium-size PDFs (hah, 2-3 MB in size) to them. Part of the reason was HP's cheapness in using a host-based driver instead of having the printer support PCL.

Pfft.
This is exactly why I switched away from Windows. No excuse for this. I have a LaserJet printer that is newer than my iMac and since I installed SL it will not print.

Shame, Apple. Watch your own ads.

Rich

i actually thought the 1012 was a really good printer. cheap, but fast and did the job. got rid of mine after my wife tried to put some plastic through it (don't know why) and prints all had little freckles on them. will try to find a workaround to the problem then post back...

Have you tried VueScan?

YES!! i got it to print on the P1006 via wi-fi (connected to my air express' USB port).

downloading and installing the most recent P1006 driver gave an error when trying to install the printer over wi-fi. using the printer directly into the computer's USB works.

but, i want to connect via wi-fi using the air express, which my printer is connected to. i found this post on the link that FeiFongWong gave:

Worked for Airport Express and P1006 connected to it by USB
Driver works fine
-Download driver from this link
http://download.driverscollection.c...Printers/LJP1000_P1500_OSX_ful_sol-v1.0.4.dmg
-goto system preferences and the printer & fax
-right click above the +- on the right side where you add printers and reset printer system... (This will clear all other drivers )
-with the printer on, install the DMG printer driver you installed
-then go back to printer& fax in system preferences and add the p1006 printer. it will select the P1006 printer with auto select, then hit ok
-restart the Mac
-open a doc or web site and print
-Call HP and Apple how unhappy you are with their printer support.

two things to add: the link might now work directly, so copy/paste and you might have to search for the HP P1005 driver. download, install, and you will have to probably force-quit the HP firmware updater that runs. then reboot, and voila, you should be able to print while the printer's connected to the air express.

and brother drivers

I got a software update for Brother drivers after updating to 10.6.1. 9.5MB

What a joke!

I've got an HP C5280 all-inone, and while I can print, I can't scan or print on CDs/DVDs. Even after this latest update. It worked perfectly under Leopard. So much for everything 'just working'...

Ok, so I installed this hoping there was something new (my C3180 worked fine so far) but this update added 524MB... Any way to uninstall this?

There is a God.

yes there is and He doesn't really care about printers.

anyways, i have never had problems with printers on the mac and my inlaws even converted to mac primarily because of dreadful printing errors with their color HP laserjet that just worked when plugged in to my macbook....
