Apple Releases USB-C to Lightning Adapter for iPhone 15 and Shorter Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable

Following the iPhone 15 event today, Apple has released a few related accessories, including a USB-C to Lightning adapter and a one-meter Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable.

Priced at $29, the USB-C to Lightning Adapter allows for Lightning accessories to be connected to the new iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max models with USB-C ports for charging, data transfer, and audio connectivity. Apple says the adapter has a braided cable for added durability. It is also compatible with USB-C iPads.

Apple's previously-existing Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable is now available in a shorter one-meter size for $69. The cable has a black braided design and can be used to connect an iPhone 15 Pro model to a Mac for data transfer, with the new Pro and Pro Max models supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2 data transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps, according to Apple.

As we previously reported, Apple has also released second-generation AirPods Pro with a USB-C charging case and EarPods with a USB-C connector.

Expecting someone to use a $70 thunderbolt 4 cable on an iphone 15 without thunderbolt support seems extra when you can get a 20gbps USB C cable on amazon for $20 bucks max. Shoot just buy a USB 4 cable.

Why would you buy a TB4 cable for USB 3.1 port that can't reach even TB3 speeds? That would be literally throwing money away; I doubt Apple is targeting it for iPhone 15 Pro as this news article claims.

Well I just bought a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter. Works great. Guess I'll have to connect that into this for a USB-C-To-Lightning-To-3.5mm adapter.

Thunderbolt is the next generation of cables we'll all start to collect. Lightning->USB-C->Thunderbolt

Also, likely next year Pro gets Thunderbolt, standard gets USB3.

Also, the chutzpah on Apple to act like USB3 is some revolutionary magical connection that only the most premium of iPhones can handle.

Expensive maybe, but the dongle is mainly useful for reusing Lightning accessories which are not that cheap.

Well, yes, of course this could be $0.25, but Apple is committed to protecting the environment, and charging $30 would ensure that you only buy as many as you need.

I still use the 30 pin to lightning adaptor in my car, so I’m gonna be going from 30 pin, to lightning, to USB-C… anymore dongles we can throw in there?

You could just buy a straight usb c to 3.5mm adapter for $10.

I don’t know why this dongle exists. It’s a fraction of the cost to buy a cable that avoids the adapter altogether in almost every scenario I can think of.
