Because the retina scanner is absolute garbage in this, even worse if you have optical inserts...
I don't know if this will help you, but I was having trouble with my AVP tracking. It just wasn't picking up a lot of what I was looking at. So, I went into Settings and re-did the tracking setup, being very careful to look directly at the small dot for each selection. It's been fine since, and I have reader inserts.

are you unplugging it? if so then yeah it'll need the code after each restart. Otherwise it's bang on every time, with inserts

I previously remarked that it was stupid for Apple to require you to take your AVP to an Apple Store if you somehow forgot your passcode, and people tried to mock me for saying that. "How can you forget your passcode?" Stuff like that.

Guess Apple agrees with me that it was stupid.

That's not how software development works. It's not like they suddenly decided to "fix this".

Software development happens in "branches".... some are "feature" branches, and some are "bug fix" branches.

Once a branch is deemed stable, it's merged into the '"main branch" for release.

They were likely still working in the passcode reset feature, which wasn't quite ready for the launch date, but is now.

They just wanted to avoid people returning it to the Apple store… because they would see another customer buying a specced up MacBook pro and wonder if dropping 3499 plus dollars on that would have been a better use of money 🤔🤨

Or a new MacBook, an iPhone, watch and an ipad…. 🥴

instead of that scuba mask 🧐

And I wondered if Apple was going to pay for my shipping b/c I live outside of a small town of 7,500. No Apple Store closer to me than Halifax, and I live on the Southwestern shore of Nova Scotia, so yeah - this update is welcome.

Good feedback to this type of complaint. I've only ever heard that the eye tracking is "perfect", so it was bizarre to read such a negative comment. Users can be so quick to just "blame someone or something else" when the problem may very likely be their own doing. 🤓

Even if they shipped it, it likely would've gotten buried in the snow until Spring. 🤣 Quite a year, eh?

By "people" you mean this forum. Apple can do no wrong.

I’m one of those who has said the eye tracking is not good in some cases. It seems terrible for me at corners of an application, especially if there are controls next to it. I’d stare at the corner and see the focus continuously shift between the control I’m looking at and the one next to it. I’d try tapping my fingers and it’d repeatedly choose the wrong control.

Scrolling on a timeline, like the ones you’d see on a YouTube video is especially frustrating, especially in the Juno app. The scroll bar simply refuses to be selected, no matter how many times I redo the eye setup. Right below it is the close box. In trying to scroll my video because an accidental finger tap sent my video far ahead or back to the beginning, I’ve ended up closing the Juno app about 80% of the time I’ve tried to scroll. So no, the eye tracking leaves much to be desired. It’s bad enough that I can easily say that eye tracking sucks. I would like to know if anyone has this issue with the Juno app since that’s a specific instance of where eye tracking fails for me a large majority of the time.

I’ve had to redo the eye tracking setup probably at least a dozen times in the last week. I do wear inserts, but have no idea if the prescription lenses have anything to do with it.

But it wasn't just about remembering. Suppose you THOUGHT you had created a certain passcode, but you entered the wrong number twice?

The point is, making someone physically travel to an Apple Store to reset it was just plain dumb. Now Apple have fixed that issue.
I mean….you’re not wrong, it was dumb to require people to go into a store.

That said, having used Apple devices since the 2006 Mac mini and exclusively Apple devices for over a decade… I’ve never forgotten a passcode or password (much less your scenario of “entered the wrong one twice 🧐”) so it’s hard for me to empathize with those that can’t manage this basic level of security.

After updating to 1.0.3, I've noticed that the icon for summoning control center floats much lower, which is a solid fix. Before, I had to tilt my head back, putting my finger taps out of range of the AVP cameras.

Good to have this option finally. Wonder why it was missing in the first place.

Definitely. and Yarmouth/Carleton NS is expecting another 10 cm today. If ai can make it home from dialysis before the snow starts I’ll be happy. But more delayed Amazon shipments.

not saying eye tracking is even close to perfect, will give it a pretty good. But i do find some apps are better than others, and Juno one of the worst. MR with those pop up like selection can also be problematic for me, but eh, had problems on my iPad too lol.

i even never redone eye setup, maybe i should.

I used to do the chase the icon up by tilting my head… then i realized its really just my eyes i had to look up high with..so i would actually move my head to look down and then move my eyes to look up…

It's possible that your eyes may be a little bit too far from the screens. That seemed to be happening to me when the light seal was the wrong size.

It was very clear the feature was just delayed. It was in the 1.1 beta, so it was already in the code path when they forked it.

What do you do when you need a password, serial number, bank account number, or any one of many other similar items when you're not at home? I can't imagine life without a password manager, which in my case stores hundreds of pieces of information.
Apple has an excellent one built in, called Keychain. All of your passwords that you keep on your computer, iPad, iPhone, etc. are kept there and of course, you can access it with a password. I’m not saying the software fix wasn’t a good one. Anything that makes it easier is good as long as it doesn’t compromise security.
