I updated the phone, then the watch, and I noticed something. I unlocked my phone with a mask on, then I hit "Lock iPhone" on my watch. The next time I swiped up on the iPhone to unlock it (without a mask on), the phone asked for my passcode. I wonder if hitting "Lock iPhone" temporarily disables FaceID? I'll keep playing with it.
To confirm, if you hit "Lock iPhone" on your watch, the next time you swipe up on the phone to unlock, it requires your passcode. Did this five times in a row, and the passcode was required every time, with or without a mask on.

I still can't get it to install on series 3, I wiped it and I can't find anything else to delete. Is this the unofficial end of support for the 3?

You need to unpair it (which will create a backup), restore it as a new watch, do the update, and then again unpair and restore from backup when setting up. It should work.

Removing any/all user data from the watch will not be enough in any case for S3 owners, which the support article acknowledges as well.

I'm on my second unpair, reset as new watch. I'll report back but so far it's a fail. Anyone get it to work on the 3?

I teach snowboarding and frequently have a mask and goggles on so the unlock feature is a nice addition.

I forgot about books which I never look at, it's preparing so I think I'm going to make it!

Woohoo! My Series 3 is finally updating to 7.4. First OS update since 7.2, i thought that this update was worth the hassle. But i'm not going to install 7.4.1 if that would mean i had to unpair, update and then repair my watch again. I'm going to buy the Apple Watch Series 7 anyway, so i think i can manage to deal with the Series 3 until September/October with this watch 7.4 update.

I've tired to run this update twice now on my Series 3. The first time I chose General > Reset > Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings, the second time I chose All Watches > i > Unpair Apple Watch, but both times, by the time I've connected it back to my phone and run the software update it says I don't have enough space.

I've done this before with previous updates. What am I missing this time?

Is there a way to update the watch without going through the basic setup on my phone to get to the point where I can run the software update?

I believe it does. On my iPhone if I do an action that "forces" the phone to lock (such as attempting but cancelling a shutdown or attempting but cancelling an emergency call (side button three times)) then I can't unlock it with touch, only passcode.

I did all of this and there still wasn’t enough space

I have to reset, set up as a new watch, go into photos and make sure none is selected, go to music make sure nothing is selected, go to books make sure nothing is selected, go to podcasts, custom, turn off everything. Go to settings, about and see if you have 3 GB, you should. If not go back and double check all the apps have nothing set to sync.
