So has anyone actually tried and succeeded to install this new 4.1.1 of Xcode? Was it a smooth install with no problems? So far none of these comments say anything about the installation experience of this from the App Store.

It was smooth with no problems for me.

Now that I have installed Xcode 4.1.1 (without a problem I might add), what should I do with Install Xcode which is now residing in my Applications folder?

I am still unable to install Xcode and I am not the only one; a topic is running on the Apple forums.

It looks like Xcode does not install on a fresh (not upgrade) Lion installation. I have downloaded Xcode 3 times now and every time I am getting the same error in /var/log/install.log

I have a new MacBook Air with pre-installed Lion. Was able to install 4.1 by quitting iTunesHelper in Activity Monitor, and the Mac App Store just successfully installed the 4.1.1 update.

I did check for that process, but it isn't there. There must be something else wrong here. Other people with this problem all did an installation of Lion on a pre-Lion mac so you might not be affected.

It does absolutly fine...

You "can" delete it, but it would cause the app store to not register Xcode as installed (last I checked anyway), and you won't receive update notifications, and will have to redownload the entire thing when an update does come out.. I'd first move it from the folder and see if its installation status does indeed change. If you want update notifications, and don't want to have to redownload the entire thing, then I'd leave it in the applications folder.

I too noticed that Xcode doesn't show as installed in the MAS after i deleted the 3GB space hogging installer from my Applications folder.

So i installed Xcode again but grabbed the app from the cache and then stripped out all the packages. now its just a 540KB app which you can put in the Applications folder and Xcode will show as installed :)

It's maybe the wrong place to post it, but:

I'm going to buy a MBP and if I'm gonna program apps for it, I'll need Xcode, I've seen it's free to download etc. but do I need to pay something to get the apps on the app store?

Yes to be able to put apps into the appstore you have to be a member of developer-program. MacDev for MacAppStore and iOSDev for iOSStore.

the company notes that users also need to quit the iTunesHelper process, which can be found in and exited from the Activity Monitor utility.

Wait, Activity Monitor?! I'm embarrassed to admit that I've been using kill, killall, and other command-line friends for the six or so years I've been using OS X, until very recently. :)

It often ends up being faster to just use command-line utilities, rather than navigate a GUI. It's one of the great things about Mac OS X (and Unix in general) in my opinion. I wouldn't be so quick to dump them if I were you.

When xcode become free?

It's free on Lion at least. $5 (on snow leopard) isn't a whole lot to ask from people for tools that will most likely make them far more than that, hell, Apple could charge far more than that and it would still sell. It's a steal at $5.

...Does that mean I need to keep the 3 GB+ installer on my hard drive forever to get delta updates? On a 256 GB SSD Air drive that's already filling up, that's going to hurt.

Yes, the original is a fundamental part of the optimization:

delta updates are smaller because they only need to contain the differences (delta means difference in this context). To end up with a working installer, you need the original + delta.

This may be a stupid question, but is there a way to direct where Xcode installs? I have a previous version on my SSD boot drive which is only 48 gigs and I might have to put it on my HDD if it's actually 3+ GB, but I keep getting error messages before even allowing me to direct it anywhere ...
