Microsoft's value certainly isn't about quality or consumer delight. It must be pure cultural permeation.
I think it’s like Microsoft is the baseline. Anyone can go to WalMart and get a new Windows laptop for under $200. Yes, there are expensive systems that also have Windows, but, as that OS is eminently available, the perceived value is lower. Anyone who wants it can have it for not much money.

Almost Apple makes (should I say everything?), even the stuff that sells pretty well in 2-3 countries to the point where it seems they’re everywhere, is automatically more rare than anything else. Combine that with the active process of kicking people off the platform while getting a lot (but not a world commanding) number of people to buy their stuff and there’s a continual surge of new folks that see value in it. They may stop seeing new value in 6-7 years, but by that time, they’ve been replaced by 4 or 5 folks new tot he platform.

When some folks say “Apple doesn’t make anything I like anymore” I think “That’s the point”. They’re one of the few customers willing to lose current customers if they have a vision they think will bring them new customers in the future and they reap the benefits of taking that risk.

wait what? is this true? I know they dont with phones... but with Macbooks??? I cant tell if this is real or not which is also sad o_O
It’s real. The EU basically said,”It’s now ok for companies not to include a charger.” Some companies do, some companies don’t. In other regions, there aren’t laws that say it’s ok not to include a charger. In those regions, there might be consumer complaints raised, so they’re avoiding that ire. In the EU, this is no longer a consumer complaint issue, so companies take advantage of that.

Now, consider that in 2012, Apple said that Lightning would be the connector for the next decade and consider that the EU’s action was passed in 2022, which was the last year Apple, the last big company not using USB-C on a major product, was going to have a lightning connector. They could have NOT passed it, Apple would be on USB-C in 2023 as they’d previously stated, and chargers would still be expected to be included.

As a customer and not an investor, the valuation of Apple means nothing to me. The excitement has been lacking and replaced by ridiculous anti consumer practices. The only reason I’m sticking around is because there is no alternative that works well together (computer, phone, tablet).

Let's not forget the $1200 upcharge for 4TB storage that any Windows PC user can get for $250. That's pretty decent profit. Imagine going to a restaurant and paying $400 for a bottle of $50 wine. Pretty sure people would complain, but not in Apple-world.

the extra price you pay for Apple is not for the hardware, its for MacOS. Thats why people buy Apple computer not Microsoft Surface.

Not many companies can attest to having their own ecosystem, compromising of hardware, software and services. Many struggle to get even one right, much less integrate them in any meaningful fashion.

Sure, but I don't care about Apple's ecosystems. I just want software that works. I want long-standing bugs to get fixed. I want there to be no need to play janitor. And I especially don't want to get roped into subscriptions via dark patterns.

These are all aspects of software quality, and just because some people feel like the alternatives are still worse, doesn't make any of that good.

You know, it’s really amazing that no other company can do this. And, apparently, the folks that value an ecosystem are the most profitable customers in the world. That’s why, even though Apple’s worldwide marketshare is low, companies are demanding governments to force Apple to allow them on Apple’s platforms for free.
