if I purchase Apple Remote Desktop,

can I use my iPhone or iPad to connect to my MacBook when I am away from home?

if so, what app on my iOS device do I use?

Apple Remote Desktop is Mac to Mac only. A challenge is that you need to setup dynamic DNS and open ports on router.

JumpDesktop has iOS viewer, but I only used Mac to Mac so far. There's 14 day trial for Mac to Mac, $30 after. Not sure if there's trial for iOS to Mac.

I personally use the free version of Team Viewer. It works great. You install the desktop software on your Mac and then install the iOS app, sign in with the same account and bingo.

ok thanks, what about the app called screens. do you think it is good? it has an iOS version also.
I've used the iPad and Mac versions of Screens for years, they work very well. If you just want to connect from your iPhone or iPad to the Mac, you don't need to buy the Mac version of Screens. You just need to turn on screen sharing, and if you're away from home install and run the free utility Screens Connect.
