I have absolutely no experience with the Apple remote ... I know they're mainly designed for Apple TV devices... but does anyone know if one will work with my 2018 Mac Mini? I mainly want it to stop and start videos being played by the VLC media player.

Failing that, is there such a thing as a remote control device that does work with Mac Mini and the VLC app?

thanks very much!

The 2018 mini does not support the Apple remote.

oh thanks for the info. glad that I checked.

follow-up question: is there any device, some kind of a bluetooth mouse or something, that will allow me to do operate some very basic functions of the mini via remote control?

thanks again!

The operating system and computer still support this feature but the sensor is no longer present. You can restore the remote function with a simple IR dongle like this one.

PS: the MIRA website is also selling software to do with the mira "dongle" - but from what you're saying, I do not need the software, I just need the dongle hardware because the capacity is already built into the Mac OS? Thanks for clarifying!

Actually wfriedwald, According to this article on the Everymac website, you may need the Mira app for a 2018 Mac mini. https://everymac.com/systems/apple/...inum-unibody-to-television-1080p-support.html

The last paragraph in the section titled "Do all the Aluminum "Unibody" Mac mini models have an IR receiver? Do they support a remote? Is it possible to add remote support?" suggests that the Mira app is essential for a 2018 mini.

ah! thank you for the information.

so to get this going I need:
1. the USB adaptor
2. the software &
3. of course, the Apple Remote itself

side question: is there another means of controlling everything remotely? Bluetooth or something like that?

Also, I have zero experiences with the Apple Remote
a - are they all the same? can I just buy any one?
b - and they will control a non-Apple (3rd party app) like VLC, right?

thanks for the answers and for any future ones!

If you have the remote and Apple TV why not transfer the file to the VLC app on ATV and play it there?

That would make sense, but no, I have neither an Apple TV nor the Apple Remote. No experience with either, alas.

thanks again,

W
