Apple Remote - what is that button?

There is a button (or at least it acts like one) on the bottom of the Apple Remote. Press it... and nothing happens?

The little tiny one on the very bottom? That's the battery release button, push it with a pen or something and the battery slides out.

Is it actually the same size as iPod shuffle? Larger? Smaller? Lighter? Heavier?

Wider, about the same height, and slightly thinner. One of my professors had one and I compared it to my Shuffle.
