Lol, one of the quickest examples of Godwin’s Law I’ve ever seen... 😂In 1930s Germany, it was the law that Jews should hand over their assets to the Nazi party and wear a yellow 'Juden' badge.
By your logic, it would be perfectly fine to have done business with them as it was the law in that country?
You like perpetuating decades of institutionalized racism? You like having the cops killing people at will and walking away scot free? You like police loaded up with military gear, beating and tear gassing crowds of innocent protestors while they’re protesting against police violence? You like a cowardly bully having police use chemical agents to clear a crowd of peaceful protestors so he can go have a photo op?Brianwashed? You like your city getting destroyed and lawlessness ?
I love Apple...but come on. They are always standing by rights to privacy here...but then bend over backwards to please China’s totalitarian crackdown on free speech & privacy there. Enough Apple. Walk your talk. Put pressure on China. Not the other way around!
Apple puts a peep of pressure on China, and China will shut down every Foxconn plant in the country.I love Apple...but come on. Plus the Chinese government has been very willing to use whatever leverage they have with a company to club them into compliance - and Apple is currently very dependent on Foxconn.
I know Foxconn is working on manufacturing elsewhere, but Foxconn is still a Chinese company - so a Chinese-owned plant in Malaysia would probably not be much of an improvement.
Uh, Foxconn is a Taiwanese company. That's very, very different.
China’s android phone no longer runs google android due to sanctions, and the open source version isn’t particularly up to the compatibility level either, meaning unless some crazy involvements on google side, many android apps will not be able to install on Chinese android devices. Plus, even for what’s left of google android, related google services are either completely removed or put behind company's personal identity check, meaning app support for anything developed outside China is natural lay terrible. What happens with Android phones in China? They can install whatever software they want, with no mandatory distribution center, right? So people with Android phones can install this podcast app and listen to whatever podcasts they want still, right?
If so, this seems to make Apple’s refusal of allowing apps to be installed without Apple’s involvement to be... particularly sinister. It’s not just greedy Apple, who demands a 30% cut of everything no matter how little involvement they have. It’s also Apple who happily carries out any oppression on behalf of the Chinese government.

With raising Apple's value from ~$300 million when he took over in 2011 to over $1.5 trillion today, Tim hasn't been any slouch on the money making side of things. It's a business, they are here to make money, Tim should just shut up or use his private time for speaking out.

Don't forget Henry Ford who received the Grand Cross of the German Eagle from Hitler. The highest Nazi award to a foreign person.Coca Cola is just one of the American companies that comes to my mind that was perfectly fine doing business with Nazi Germany. People seem to forget too fast.

America? Safe?Right, so lets all just be honest about Apple's selective outrage and virtue signalling where it is safe, not where it takes real courage.
Has Apple once spoken out against these laws? Tim Cook has no problem speaking out against things in the USA. If, say, the state of Mississippi passed a law that said app stores must carry conversion therapy apps in their App Store do yo think Apple/Tim Cook wouldn‘t have something to say about it?
Good for Pocket Casts. I wish Apple would just one time stand up to China. Maybe if more western companies did things would change.
I’m sorry I think it’s cowardly. Just like the NBA. If you say it’s just business then I’d say stop the virtue signaling at home. It totally rings hollow. It stands to reason that an American citizen in charge of an American company would be in a position to speak out on matters happening in their own country. And Tim Cook can do so in the US in his capacity as the CEO of Apple because the laws allow for it. Such openness is just not possible in other countries like China.
In the same vein, I don’t think Tim Cook would have sufficient knowledge and context of a country’s history to comment on why certain things are done the way they are and personally, I would rather he doesn’t.
I live in Singapore. I have my beef with the way our government does certain things, but the last thing I would want would be for Apple or any other US company to butt in and try to interfere with our country.
Second, I think Americans need to understand that not every country necessarily shares their values. Apple is not a political entity tasked with undermining political institutions, however much some of you might wish for Apple to be.
Lastly, I am glad that Apple is not so close-minded that they would choose only to do business in countries with laws that match their beliefs. This would result in Apple operating in only a small number of countries, and ultimately undermine its mission of creating tools for people.
At the end of the day, what Tim Cook has chosen to do is engage. While he has become more comfortable discussing issues such as equality, privacy and environmental responsibility, he doesn’t weaponise them to to issue ultimatums to foreign governments.
Apple makes tools to improve people’s lives while continuing to follow local laws. I really don’t see what the issue with that is.
