Isn't the solution to this problem to buy a non-US model that has the SIM tray? I hope that is a purchase option for folks who need a sim tray.
It’s not really a good solution, AT&T and Verizon are really picky about supporting non-us iPhones.

This is really stupid. Just in the past couple months we've needed to get SIM cards in Italy and India. Unless we're sure this tech proliferates around the world right away, I'm either not going to upgrade our phones (which are getting long in the tooth) or we're going to need to keep our old phones for travel purposes.

Absolutely ridiculous. What if an American wants to travel to Indonesia and get a local sim?!

What if an Apple exec has to travel and gets a 1 week local travel sim for data

How is this practical, when you have to travel, and the world has not converted yet?! Smh
Unlike you and me, they are not living in the commoner's world. :(
This is totally ridiculous.
I am not paying $10 a day to AT&T when that same amount of money basically covers a whole week of unlimited call and data by popping in a local SIM card.

It will be interesting to see how T-Mobile US will transfer the physical SIM information on my iPhone 12 to an iPhone 14/14 Pro model. Will I have to do it at a T-Mobile store or at an Apple Store?

I was about to order iPhone 14 pro max, new Watch and Airpods Pro. Now without a physical slot I do not order any of them. I travel a lot.
May be you have different opinion, but for me Apple is over. i switch to Galaxy S23 , hope they in Samsung have brain not to follow Apple.
Unfortunately Samsung will most likely follow. I really hope they don't.

Absolute dick move by apple, especially if you are on a prepaid network. Visible is pretty much the only prepaid that supports e-sim and it's a giant cluster. My cousins use it and its a giant headache trying to swap phones or troubleshoot stuff.
Mint, spectrum, cricket all support eSIM.

The Apple exec will spend hundreds or thousands of dollars in roaming charges and bill it to the company - I.e. indirectly to Apple’s customers.

But yes, for most people it is a ridiculous omission. And it gives Apple a lot of commercial leverage as eventually if no iPhone has sim slot anymore, network carriers will need Apple‘s approval to be supported on iPhones (with physical sims it is not really practical to blacklist carriers).

I work internationally and literally cannot buy this phone anymore. I’ll either have to buy outside of the US or switch phones manufacturers.

This is truly the most short sighted decision Apple has made in a long while.

And it’s not global so this won’t spur esim adoption globally.

Edit: I stopped being lazy and googled it and apparently the country I’m working in currently does support esims. So my complaint was void.

Same question here (for my wife and I). I'm hoping I can just do it over the phone or something, I don't want to have to go into the store for that.

How does this work when you want to use a local SIM internationally?
You buy another phone, apparently. They basically just made US-purchased iPhones useless for global travelers.

One of the most idiotic moves Apple has ever made, but hey, it only impacts a small number of us and the US carriers have such a good eSIM implementation (sarcasm - it's still a total mess that can involve extensive in-person travel) that a SIM tray isn't needed.

Could this not be done by the user? I mean, in iOS 15.6.1 on my 11 Pro I see the means to transfer everything from one phone to another, and I would assume that would work, physical SIM, eSIM, or otherwise... Should that still not apply?

Your phone will have multiple eSIMS. Just get a prepaid eSIM when you travel.
