The battery on my iPhone X swelled and I chose to book an appointment at a Calgary Apple Store to get it looked at. One of the stores I could not get into until the next week, the other I got an appointment for the next day. Even with the appointment I had to go into a short line after answering questions (no, I don't have symptoms) and have my temperature taken. I was into the store in less than 5 minutes where the social distancing was enforced. In the end I chose to pay $90CDN for a new battery (my iPhone was 7 months past Apple Care warranty) which actually meant I got a new iPhone X with a 90 day warranty. Because I got a new phone I also got one year of Apple TV+ which I was holding out on until I had to buy an Apple product. Not bad for $90: replaced a 2.5 year old phone (no more scratches), got a 90 day warranty extension, and Apple TV+.

Still plan to do most things online, though. There are too many yahoos out there not wearing masks and not paying attention to social distancing. I have a 94 year-old mother-in-law in my cohort and I cannot afford to take the risks some people seem to be willing to take.

Were the Apple retail employees getting paid during the closure?

Yes. It would look horrible on Apple if they stopped paying their retail employees Lol.

Does anyone know how the return process works for items purchased during the store closures? Will Apple accept online purchases or only in-store purchases prior to the lockdown (that were in their return window when the stores closed)?

I don’t know officially, but I really wouldn’t worry. For the past several years Apple has allowed you to return online purchase and in-store purchases to the physical retail stores.

All they have to do is literally press a button to override a return that is past its return date.

As long as your product isn’t damaged and you have the receipt, you’re fine. I cannot picture Apple saying “oops sorry we were in a pandemic. you can’t return your stuff.”

Profit so good that curbing a potential wave 2 just isn’t worth it… Sounds about right

Yes WHY... WHY is the USA opening up?

It's one of the worst impacted countries and like... it's in trouble right now! Absolutely no reason to open up.

IMO there's a massive myth that the faster you open everything up, the faster the economy will recover. However, this is simply not true as the structural damage is what hurts. Simply rushing to open up risks a 2nd wave, more damage and blah blah blah.

I'm in Australia and I used to think we were pretty similar to the USA. Every time I read stuff online I realise how far apart we are in terms of thinking.

Physical stores are so 2019 :p
I do think there will be a permanent change to the way people live their lives. It will probably be the end of next year before the virus is under control and it is safe to go to bars, movies and such. By then, the changes will be ingrained in how people think. The idea of going to a place with lots of people will just seem wrong.

So just an update for anyone looking to do a return. My local stores are just doing curbside sales and genius visits or sales and genius by appointment only. So I picked up a 2020 MacBook Pro with free AirPods from the education offer. I brought my refurb 2019 Pro with me just in case but was told since the store isn’t fully open yet that they aren’t doing any returns. The store I went to is inside a mall which isn’t open yet either so I suggest calling ahead of time just to confirm that what you would be looking to do can be accommodated.

By the way Apple Stores here in Utah don’t allow browsing :(. I had a mask and they still want to boot you out of the store even if you are keeping six feet away.

As a former public health official I like the approach but wish a Apple had a reservation system for browsers.
Yea appointments with a set timeframe. If you are still browsing when time is almost up, you need to purchase or get out. Some people would like to see a product in person and not just on a site. Enjoyed it so much better when you could actually compare multiple choices in store before all this shipping only garbage started.

Masks protect you and others. Sorry if violates your "freedoms"
I don't need a mask to keep me safe. My immune system can take care of it.

Really? You don’t care if everyone is coughing and sneezing all over everything during a pandemic? 😱
Why would i? 99% of people get a cough for a few days and are perfectly fine. People are so dramatic. "a pandemic" LOL.

We’re still in wave 1 in the USA, and now we’re reopening. I sure hope folks are at least protecting each other by wearing masks in public.

Just stay at home with a mask on 24/7. That’ll increase your survival chances during the “2nd wave/surge.”
Feel free to peek out the window here and there if you’re feeling like taking a risk.

Reading > you.

Others but you'd have not be selfish to understand.
Stay home. You’ll be safe there.

And you dismiss that 1% as old, as though that’s deserving of early termination. Your many comments on this topic leads me to believe you have some grievance with older people.

Early? Most of the people dying are already past human life expectancy.

And this is somehow ok with you?

Dude, you're making yourself look like a selfish jerk.
Yes. I'm more than ok with it. The planet is far too populated anyway. If people are going to die, might as well be older people that have already lived full lives.

20% are under 70. This isn’t “past life expectancy” as per your prior post. It’s also not a random few like you’ve also said previously.
