Apple has started to source OLED displays for its next-generation iPhone SE, according to Taiwanese supply chain publication DigiTimes.

iPhone-SE-4-Thumb-1.jpg

"According to industry sources, Apple has begun sourcing OLED panels from BOE and other Chinese manufacturers for its next-generation iPhone SE series," the report states. No further details about the display were provided.

This information aligns with multiple previous reports that indicated BOE would supply OLED displays for the next iPhone SE.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman earlier this week reported that the fourth-generation iPhone SE will be released "early next year." He expects the device to have a similar design as the iPhone 14, including an edge-to-edge screen with a notch, which suggests that it will support Face ID. He also expects the new iPhone SE to support Apple Intelligence, and this means the device would likely have an increased 8GB of RAM. Apple Intelligence is currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models.

If the new iPhone SE is based on the iPhone 14, it would have a 6.1-inch OLED display, whereas the current model has a 4.7-inch LCD. Other features previously rumored for the next iPhone SE include a USB-C port and the Action button.

All three existing iPhone SE models were announced in March or April over the years.

Thoughts on pricing?

If it really does have the A18 with 8gb of ram to support AI but only one camera on the back I dont know how they can sell it for less than $499 for 64gb.

This may get really confusing since the iPhone 14 will presumably still be for sale. A phone with better cameras but worse system on a chip and less features.

I feel like the 14 and 15 will be a really hard sell if this phone is what it seems like it might be. To the point that I’m thinking they might discontinue one or both.

I find this a very interesting example of product management. How power the SE4 is vs the current lineup, what price point it sells for, etc...

It still feels like the SE could be an impressive "low-end" device, or a remarkable "high-end" device, depending on the parts and prices:

My prediction:

iPhone 17 Pro Max - $1399 (256 GB and up)
iPhone 17 Pro - $1199 (256 GB and up)
iPhone 17 Air - $999 (128 GB and up)
iPhone 17 Plus - $899 (128 GB and up)
iPhone 17 - $799 (128 GB and up)
iPhone 16 - $699 (128 GB and up)
iPhone 15 - $599 (128 GB and up)
iPhone SE4 - $499 (128 GB and up): only notch iPhone remaining

iPhone 14 will awkwardly stay in the lineup until iPhone 17 is released.

$549-579. iPhone SE 3rd Gen with its 6 year old design/HW was $479 for 128GB Variant. Sure, Apple is saving on the premium that they had to shell out to Qualcomm for their 5G Modem, still $499 for base 128GB does not sound realistic at all in 2025. Will start with 128GB, I have no doubts on that front.

And then pull the 14 I guess but awkwardly keep the 15 in the lineup.

If they keep the iPhone 15, then its going to create a whole lot of confusion thanks to yet another convoluted portfolio of SKUs. Imagine choosing between Dynamic Island + UW Camera vs Apple Intelligence + A18 with 8GB of RAM.

$499 is actually doable because the ASP is further increased by eliminating the 64 GB model

Surely, they'll clear out the iPhone 14 stocks adn discontinue from their website just before the launch of SE 4th Gen but the offline and online 3rd party retailers will shamelessly continue selling it to bolster their margins which will eventually add confusion to the buyers w.r.t decision-making.

The Apple Margins are not quite adding up if they price it at $499. Do we really think that they'll take a hit at their profit margins just to offer average consumer an option below $500? $549 for 128GB seems plausible as of now. In case they can launch it at $499, kudos to them for thinking about the consumer after a long 4 and half years (Launch of MacBook Air M1 at good price).

Discontinuing iPhone 15 does serve a purpose for them though that is upselling the iPhone 16 to the consumer those who don't want a notch in 2025.

iPhone SE2 launched with a price cut over the iPhone 8 it replaced. ($399 vs. $449).

So just a small price increase over SE3, with help from raising the starting price, is not unthinkable

Fair point. Fingers crossed for a $499 launch. Been super stoked for the launch since the 1st Ming-Chi-Kuo report.

This phone must have broken a record for the amount of rumours over the years.
Easily!
iPhone XR Body.
Launch Pushed Back.
Launch Cancelled.
iPhone 14 Derivative.
Launch cancelled since they failed to develop efficient 5G Modems.
Project Ghost revived.
To Launch with Apple 5G Modem.
To Launch with Apple A16.
iPhone 16 Derivative.
Not iPhone 16 Derivative.
iPhone 14 Derivative.
A18 + Apple Intelligence.
Q125 Launch
Phew!

Probably my next iPhone, especially if the camera comes with Night mode
I am afraid we'll again see some stupid omissions of SW features.
It'll be a shame if they skimp on such basic camera features (as per 2025 standards), this phone has the basics sorted and could well be a minimalist's dream phone.

At this point, it is cheaper to buy 2nd hand last year flagship or baseline 16 than this. SE had never been ideal. Build quality of my SE 3 is mediocre at best, feels like cheap phone. Also battery life had been very bad ever since SE1, I doubt fourth iteration changes something

What a shame, Apple, to have make iPhone 15 not compatible with Apple Intelligence !
