Good move for Apple

This is a good move for Apple. They're seeing flash memory as the long-term replacement for spinning disk, and buying deep technological know-how like Anobit is a great way to make it happen.

The only down side is that there are people who, the moment they see the word "Israel," fly into unquenchable rage. But that's their, problem, not Apple's, not Google's, not Intel's, nor any other first-class tech company with a research lab in Israel.

There isn't enough American knowledge for Apple to utilize. It has been reported numerous times Apple struggles to find competent workers in the U.S.

Reported where? I've never seen such a report. I don't think Apple has any problems attracting great talent. That's not to say that American workers overall are highly competent, just that since Apple can attract the best of them, they don't have a problem.

Having said that, there's nothing wrong with spreading development, design, etc., throughout the world. A company should always be close to its markets, IMO. If manufacturing can only be done in places where the price of labor is very low, at least Apple can make up for it a little by spreading other functions throughout the world. Although there's only 7.8 million people in Israel. That's fewer than the number of people in the five boroughs of New York City.

Disgusted that Apple is paying so much for this pile of crap. Tim Cook should resign.

I don't know about you but I tend to lean towards agreeing with Internet dudes who comment on things without knowing the facts more than a CEO who did his due diligence.

Why is it a "pile of crap"? Anobit are world leaders in their field. From what I understand this should be a brilliant move by Apple. It's not only the technology they are getting, but the quality of the Israeli team as well.

Didn't he grow up in the US?

No, he grew up in Israel but studied and worked in the US. Bibi's English is excellent... probably one of his aids wrote it. "fruit of the Israeli knowledge" is direct translation from Hebrew ;)

I disagree, Coley. Leave Apple's personnel decisions to Apple, and you mind your own company's problems. That is, unless YOU have a better track record for supply chain management and have put in the time Cook has?

This is a great step for Apple in expanding its innovation to Israel. Israel is currently a leading nation in new advancements in technology and has companies such as Intel already invested in their human resources. I hope Apple continues its forward thinking and uses this as a beginning in strong ties with Israeli businesses in the pursuit of better products.

Agree, worst investment ever for Apple.

Lets see what comes of this purchase

I don't understand why this is the "worst investment ever." Apple probably wants to help keep costs down in licensing fees and can use this companies patent in lawsuits (even though I believe these constant lawsuits are harmful). Israel is also on the cutting edge of technological advancements and is a great foothold for Apple's innovation.

I'm not spinning anything, this is an IP acquisition, this is a fabless semi conductor's firm, ie, an IP firm. Let's not kid ourselves that this is IP acquisition, now what this IP will be used for beyond the current licensing of said IP (which Apple already does according again to the other thread) could be any of the things I listed (stabilizing their licensing costs, preventing new players or ammunition for lawsuits against other mobile players).

Or any number of other things. Like new products in the Anobit pipeline which Apple wants for themselves. Or specific talent in Anobit that they want working for them. Maybe they have a bigger plan and Anobit is simply a good entry point. Could they be even thinking about manufacturing their own memory? Who knows! (yeah, I get that the mere thought hurts you, but so be it)

Do you have to spin everything I say into some kind of "anti-Apple" stuff ? I never posted anything anti-Apple here. Give it a rest.

Do you have to spin everything anyone says as pro-whatever or anti-whoknowswhat? I asked why are you so sure about whatever you say, not which is your favourite or less favourite company. See any difference?

With $500,000,000 in the Israeli economy, that will make a huge impact on the already fantastic economy.

But how many Haredim will that feed? Your economy is going to tank eventually under its own weight like Greece unless you make some drastic changes to the labor pool.

Ahh gota love the MSM.

Everyone sees 'flash maker' and automatically thinks Anobit will somehow completely replace Samsung as provider of flash memory in iDevices...

Just wanted to point Tim got on the fast track in Apple when he smoothed out supply chain issues by working with firms like 'samsung' to ensure steady stream of ram/lcd.

So you agree with me, this is an IP acquisition which could be used for a lot of things, of which some I listed are possibilities and of which others you listed are possibilities.

If you agree with me, why so confrontational ?

Nope, see your above comment about "the mere thought hurts you".

I'm the last one to spin everything as black and white and if anything, I'm anti-black-and-white. Again, why so confrontational ? Can't you have a normal discussion ? If not, tell me now and I will simply move you to my ignore list.

As an Israeli, I see this everyday. People fight about who owns a tiny strip of land with NO oil, because we "took" it from them. Let's focus on the actual topic. With $500,000,000 in the Israeli economy, that will make a huge impact on the already fantastic economy.

I am very excited about this.

I'm sure as hell not.

Israel receives on average about 3 billion in direct foreign assistance each year from the U.S.

I don't understand why Apple did this, they could've bought a similar deal here in the U.S.

Couldn't agree more, this is outrageous!

Somebody in Apple persuaded them with tactics (that worked) and to pay that much for this in Israel
