Apple is reportedly increasing iPhone shipments by 30% for the first half of next year with the larger goal of exceeding 300 million iPhone shipments in 2022, according to a new report from DigiTimes Taiwan.

The report, citing persons familiar with the matter, said that Apple is hoping to challenge its target of shipping 300 million iPhones in 2022. Shipments for the first half of the year for the iPhone 13 lineup will increase by 30%, according to the report, but the entire year's performance will also be impacted by the launch of the iPhone 14 in the fall.

Bloomberg reported earlier this month that Apple was informing its suppliers to lower production of the iPhone amid lower demand. iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro availability had initially been unreliable due to high demand coupled with the ongoing chip shortage. Today's report suggests that Apple is expecting demand to rebound in early 2022, and furthermore, is expecting a bigger year overall fueled by the iPhone 14 in the fall.

Another day, another different story. So…..demand isn’t waning? In other words, business as usual, and only apple knows. Thus…..macRumors.
FYI, both stories can be true.

Apple could be expecting 30% higher sales now, but planned for 50% (for example) earlier.

But yes, no one knows for sure. And there are probably agendas (insider trading) with these "reports".

It could also be both. Apple is still working though the backlog of people who have placed orders so far with still many models being supply constrained. This could just be production catching up with demand, even if that demand is lower than other years. We just don't know, and most who claim to know are probably guessing as well.

The part of the story that caught my eye is the hope of shipping 300 million iPhones in 2022. For real?

The most iPhones ever shipped in a single year was 230 million. And that was six years ago. iPhone shipments have leveled off to around 200 million since then.

300 million sounds a little too ambitious... even for analysts. (professional guessers)

I'd love to revisit this article in January 2023 to see how they did.

:p

"Bloomberg reported earlier this month that Apple was informing its suppliers to lower production of the ‌iPhone‌ amid lower demand." Every year someone tries to make this into a thing. "Apple adjusts production goals - the sky is falling!" Well, just like every year, production is set to meet certain targets, production is adjusted based on what the market is actually doing. Hmmm, sounds like the sky is falling

So where’s that 30% reduction notice to suppliers come from? All are just smokes and mirrors now? Artificially hyping the supply and demand?

Or apple really believe Jan 2022 is the tipping point when most of what we were taken for granted in 2019 and before will be back?

Don’t you just love the now complete predicability’s of reports about AAPL.

Editor-to-Analyst: “Time to move AAPL down so we can buy low. Then move it up so we can profit”.

Analyst-to-Editor: “Okay, boss, I’ll get right on it.

But then, as an AAPL investor, I kinda like the movement because when it’s down I’m buying low with the reinvested dividends and making someone in the process. Long live Capitalism!
