Apple "has just laid off an entire team dedicated to VR development," reports AppleInsider, citing its own source. Apple is said to have laid off at least 60 employees from its Apple Vision Group.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported that the Vision Pro team was disbanded and its members redistributed across other projects, following the October 2025 refresh of the Vision Pro and the headset's weak reception.

Incoming Apple CEO John Ternus also reportedly signed off on canceling both a second Vision Pro and a cheaper, slimmer "Vision Air," with Apple's focus now shifted to smart glasses.

Last month, The Elec reported that Apple had suspended development of the display for a cheaper, lighter version of the Vision Pro that it originally planned to launch in the next few years. Gurman doesn't expect Apple to launch another headset before late 2028 at the earliest.

This is expected, although maybe earlier than some at Apple were hoping for. This rumor (let's assume it's true) doesn't mean the AVP is completely out. We also don't know the circumstances of the lay offs (assuming they happened).

The AVP was never for 'normal' people (if you have one -- you aren't 'normal' -- I mean that endearingly). Yes, Apple wanted to make money with it, but it was always a step towards smart glasses.

Here’s the thing Macrumors…

You talk about massive product leaks in iOS 27 beta, one of those is apparently the Vision successor. Your own words, not mine.

Both things can be true, but what I don’t like is you fail to mention that in this report at all - lazy journalism.

PRICE is the reason for its downfall.
Had Vision Pro started at $999
It would have been extremely successful.
I disagree. I had a $700 Oculus like 7? Years ago and figured out it was a novelty item with no practical consumer use in a matter of a couple months. Apple is about to find this out yet again (ahem, iPhone Air) with a folding $2000-2500 phone. I was excited for such a product until I read reviews about the Samsung product. The novelty wears off. I realized that it sacrificing the great qualities of the phone or the iPad and folding up mediocrity.

This. Apple could have dominated by a really low introduction, get everyone on board and into the ecosystem and make a killing but now their entire future of VR is gone from not playing the market. Just like the Apple Car.

Have the employees actually been laid off, (ie lost their jobs and now unemployed?(or are they being moved to other positions), or being given the offer of other repositions within the company?

This is the type of story that should be held off from being published/posted until this has actually been confirmed.

Just saying "reportedly" really doesn't make it better journalism.

AVP, like the Titan Car Project, was a hype trend that Apple pursued, the former of which Apple actually followed through on to release. But the premise was based on Metaverse-esque hype from like 10 years ago that has since become quite irrelevant.

So a group that was previously disbanded still had 60+ members? Gurman wrong again!

Gurman isn't paid to be correct, his job is to get keep the stock price fluctuating.

I think either parts of the team are in the AirPods group or the former vision team just got their "built it in a cave with a box of scraps" moment. Or some combination of the two

What do they expect? The Meta Quest 3 is 90% of the product for 10% of the price. The monitor function is ok, passthrough more than adequate for AR and the selection of games infinitely better.

I often take mine on lengthy business trips (when my luggage allows) and use it to watch movies on my own private cinema or kill the evening in Tetris Effect. It doesn't matter if it takes a few knocks in transit because it's a robust plastic and only £300 to replace.

I have however been debating replacing it with a pair of XReal glasses as all I need is the private screen really.

The other reason is the marketing. They clearly wanted to have another iPhone moment, but that wasn't going to happen.

If they had actually positioned it as a developer device, instead of trying to retcon that, it wouldn't have had to be successful, because nobody expects it of something like that.

There's no way they could sell it that cheap, but positioning it as a developer device and being honest about how expensive it is would have helped a lot.

Apple seems to have a problem just being straightforward the last several years. Hopefully that changes with Ternus.
