I can understand the temptation to put ads on maps, but it is totally the wrong app for ads. If you are out driving and need to check directions in a hurry, waiting 30 seconds for some inane ad to finish is going piss off a lot of people. Plus people don't spend that much time on the ap. Apps like News is a better choice, people spend a lot more time reading the news. CNN makes you watch a network ad before watching videos. Now they have added a subscription fee. Plus, I make it point to NEVER buy any product that I am forced watch. My mute button on the remote is badly worn, if I don't want watch as well. I switch to the cable guide.

The ad creep in tech is textbook rent seeking. Companies already earned revenue from hardware, software, or subscriptions. Now they want to monetize the same users again by inserting friction they can sell relief from. They’re not building; they’re fencing off parts of the garden and renting out shade.

It’s feudalism with push notifications.

This news has caused me to download Organic Maps:
Maps of more traditional look.

Apple Map is prettier, but

What Organic is lacking is POI, in which Apple Map is also lagging behind Google Map.

For privacy, light weight and not requiring user reviews, i would surely go for Organic Maps.

Correct.
I wish more were calling it out as Apple is doing it.

"Services" revenue growth is all exactly as you've described above.

So glad you said this. This is not textbook rent seeking. In fact the opposite. People seem not to understand what rent seeking is.

Can’t dispute that. We the consumers are monetized left, Right and center. Radio, tv, internet, apps, mail, and now refrigerators lol. 100%. Apple is just late to the game.

Pretty funny, but no that is not what they are doing.

Not at all.

Apple Maps could feature integrated ads as soon as next year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

iOS-26-Maps-Glass.jpg

In his latest "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that Apple's plan to bring more ads to iOS is moving "gaining traction," with the Maps app being next in line. The project will apparently give restaurants and other businesses the option to pay to have their details featured more prominently in search.

The system is said to be similar to Search Ads in the App Store, which allows developers to pay to have their software appear in a promoted slot above other results for relevant queries. Apple's approach reportedly leverages AI to deliver relevant and useful results, in a better interface than similar offerings from Google and other companies. Gurman warned that the move risks some amount of consumer backlash.

If Apple reads this they better understand every Apple IPhone user HATES adds. Many will move from Apple Maps because of this mistake. When the IPhone first came out Iphone had some fun games that were a one time purchase, now many games require you to pay a subscription or pay more at every level of the game. I don't play games anymore because of it. The games I paid for when the IPhone was new were never updated with the newer software. Kind of sad how that happened.

I dislike intrusive ads but tolerate others. Unfortunately ads are pervasive. And some will move from Apple Maps, but imo most won’t care.

When the iPhone first came out, there was no way to play games on it (though browser based games quickly emerged), and no App Store you could buy games from. You could call/text, play locally stored music (transferred via iTunes from your Mac/PC) and browse the Interwebs; that was it :)

But yeah, I share your frustration!

This is how Google defines rent-seeking:

"Rent-seeking is the pursuit of wealth without creating new wealth, often through the manipulation of government or market systems to gain an advantage."

Which sounds pretty much like what the other guy meant; squeezing the lemon (being the customers)..?

Yeah pretty much not ads. That’s not market forces. Of course we can disagree on what market forces mean. And this clearly isn’t manipulation.

Cal Newport acknowledges this (sort of) in a recent show, although his talk is about focused work vs attention grabbing devices/apps. I thought it was neat he said at first the phones, apps, etc were function and useful. Then they devolved to ads and getting your attention for various money making streams.

I encounter this (misuse of terms) a lot, I guess we all do the more people we talk to!) and it is hard to have conversations with people that use these terms incorrectly or not what the terms mean. If I had a buck for everytime someone uses "gaslighting" when it's not....
Of course we see this all the time with "literally...." :) so I really try to understand what the other person is meaning....I just wish they could use the terms correctly!

Oh we know exactly what the underlying message is.

Here’s an analogy. BMW charging you to use heated seats when the hardware is already installed. By some people’s definition, that’s rent seeking.

Not mine, I refuse to buy any appliance like refrigerators that need to be connected to the internet. At best, I start getting nagged about ads and they samsung collects data about my purchases, at worst the security is horrible and could allow an access point into my network and computers.

Yeah mine neither, we got a 25 year old General Electric.

me three, through the years I have grown more and more distancing of anything that pushes advertisements. Sort of like car payments. Once you don't have them anymore, you are loath to put yourself in the position to have them again. And yes, it may mean we have to go without an applicance or device for months (or years) until we find a "dumb" one, but they are out there and I guess we vote with our wallet in that way.
