Believe it or not, outside the echo chamber of online forums, I think most people don't give a rat's ass if their AirPods use the "wrong cable" to charge. People will just plug it in (using the cable everyone has lying around already) and move on with their lives. Or they'll just charge it wirelessly.
That's what I've been saying. Outside of MacRumors...I have NEVER heard ANYONE complain about Apple devices that still use Lightning. On MacRumors...people act like it's the apocalypse. If the majority of users actually gave a crap...the switch would have happened a long time ago.

I'll even call BS on the "if everything uses USB-C, I'll only need one cable". Yeah...you charge all of your devices one at a time? Doubt it. If you have enough free time to do that...I envy you!

while I haven’t been as massive a USB-C defender as others, I do take issue with this a bit.
While yes, obviously charging every single one of your devices with one single cable isn’t realistic, the thought that in 5–10 years, no matter where you go, more likely than not a USB-C cable can charge the majority of mobile devices is quite a nice thought.
Android phones, iPhones, MacBooks, Windows laptops, remotes, accessories, earbuds and headphones… all charge via the same exact connector? No “Apple chargers” and “Android Chargers”, it’s all just the exact same? That sounds great.
Now obviously there’s some caveats, I don’t think this is something that should have been forced on companies by the government, and it’s going to take years and years for the majority to switch everything over, but it will be nice when it happens.
shame it has to be this particular design, I do think that Lightning, just when it comes to the way that it’s actually designed and shaped, is much better.
You don’t get that satisfying click with USB-C you do with Lightning.

Absolutely despicable.
Apple adorns itself with borrowed feathers when it calls itself environmentally friendly by prolonging this extension.
I hope the EU will ban the sales until they get their crap together.
Because making everyone replace their lighting devices and cables is an environmental thing ... I have 6 or 7 cables and several devices I have no plan to replace that are lighting.

OK, maybe a stupid question, go easy on me, but what do most people do with their previous AirPods when they upgrade?
It’s not a stupid question. This is what happens to all of my old earbuds…but not when I “upgrade”…when I replace them:

  • The left one goes into the garbage because the right one fell in the toilet…
  • They both go into the garbage because they fell into the composter when I was turning it over with a pitchfork…
  • The right one goes into the garbage because the left one fell on the street and got run over by a car before I could retrieve it…
  • They both go in the garbage because one or both are splitting apart and opening up at the seams. I have a theory that it’s not due to a battery failing; it’s probably due to my earwax building up inside and causing a critical mass bursting of the casing…
  • They went missing while I was tilling the garden…
  • One of them won’t charge anymore even after a Bluetooth reset.
Like the sock monster who lives in the dryer and never eats more than one sock from a pair, Kismet usually does in one of my earbuds and I end up throwing the other one out and buying a new set.

Every single person I show how I connect all my devices with one cable (and adapters as needed) want to make that switch. The faster we get everything on USB C, the better.

Edit: These are traveling professionals I'm referring to. Worth including who is in the demographic I'm referencing.

I bought Airpods 3 last weekend to replace my 2’s, knowing full well that everything is switching to C soon.

How did I get screwed?

Apologies if I seem overly dramatic, but you know it's really just this annoyingly slow transition period where we as consumers are all moving to USB-C. I can't wait to just have a couple of chargers to do everything in my household.

Even now the iPhones are practically the one remaining thing that still uses lightning in my household and we have to juggle cables or hunt the house for the lightning charger.

It's just feels like Apple is intentionally slow-rolling it at this point 😅

While I wish Apple would have moved to USB-C faster, lightning does have its advantages. At least it has with me. With all my lightning products I have owned over the years I have never broken a lightning port on the device itself - although have on some cables. However I've had multiple devices, including two iPad Pros, where the USB-C port itself has failed or broke.

I carry just about every connector there is, even if I don’t have a device for one.

Why? Well, if the CEO for ”Big Device International” is on the seat next to me in 1st Class and she needs to charge her whoozit/whatzit, I will be able to hand her a cable from my carry-on bag. Now we can network and have a conversation while her phone is charging.

And if her seat’s USB port doesn’t work, I’ll hand her my 10,000 mAH battery so that she might be able to get a 40% charge by the time the landing gear drop for our arrival. And then we can have a conversation while her phone is charging.

”I’m sorry, but I only have Apple cables” or “I only have USB-C cables” is kind of “cablist“ to me, and I might miss out on a valuable career opportunity all due to my cable-bigotry.

I say, people, DON’T BE A CABLE BIGOT. Be inclusive!

My awesome new favorite Beats Fit Pro use USB-C, but I’m still planning on needing both Lightning and USB-C for at least a few more years.

I have both an iPad Pro with USB and an iPhone with lightning connector. I wish I could charge all my stuff with the one cable. Either Lightning or USB C. Now it is paranoid with swapping cables all the time.
Same. And I also charge my MacBook Pro and Air with USB-C. The magsafe charger and cable for the Pro are still unwrapped in the box.

I found the thinner lightning cables tend to get frayed if you flex them frequently in used close to plugged in connector. Where as USB-C cables are noticeably thicker, less flexible likely to wear better unplugging/flexing cables around the connector. You also have braid on some USB-C cables is more strong.
