Probably worth 18 mil already.

And by the time he's finished designing it, 64 mil :)

Nah, by the time Jony Ive's finished with his new house it'll look like this -

Looking at the salaries, I have to say yes.

No. The market is the market. Those engineers could come to silicon valley and make more. They choose to live where they live and the presumed local worth of their career. Apple isn't setting the going price of s/w and h/w engineers in the U.K., the local market is doing that, same as it does in the U.S.

I'm not really saying anything else. All I am saying is that Apple is obviously trying to get a cheaper piece of the cake as well.

And as a matter of fact, I do work with quite a few Brits who left the UK to improve their salaries.

Once this is redesigned it will have a flatter, translucent exterior.

Still too much skeuomorphic design ( doors that look like doors, windows that look like windows, etc. :D

I always thought he would be living in a house more like this, simple and pure :

I think I will start a business based on selling iPhone cases that add 3mm thickness to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Seeing how many people hate thinner mobile phones, these cases will sell like hotcakes.

In that Vanity Fair interview he said the commute to Cupertino right now was around 2 hours. The house is probably for his wife. :D

I wouldn't be surprised to find that retirement is on his mind. As for long driving distances that just sucks and frankly I wouldn't even live in a city where it is common.

When you've got that kind of money, can't you just rent a helicopter that would come and take you home everyday ?
Serious question. I have no idea what's the rate for a quick ( 20mn ? ) helicopter trip back&forth everyday, but it's not like you're travelling for hours ..

Cambridge is small but full of traffic and the odd mad cyclist!!!

Looks nice, I'd love to work there. Unfortunately, there's an ocean separating me from this place.

Of course it's his choice to live in San Francisco. I believe he's the only SVP that does. Though with views like this I guess I can understand why.

You are right lol.

So Apple is trying to exploit the cheap R&D workforce in the UK, it seems.

I scanned some job offers in the UK in recent months, as my wife is always talking about moving to the UK. I was shocked when I saw the low salaries, especially considering the cost of living in the UK. Perhaps that's what is drawing Apple there.

They will have to pay tons more than someplace like china. No slave labor there.

The "intelligence" of some of the posts in this thread is truly astounding. Apple spreading it's R&D around more internationally and people want to talk about Ive's home -- one that probably none of the mocking posters could ever hope to afford because they'll never be worth Ive's pay.

Ive isn't the subject of this thread. Stop hijacking it.

Apple is increasingly becoming dependent on non-U.S. revenue. It makes sense that it spreads out its knowledge base close to where sales will be made. And as another poster already mentioned, Apple has a lot of $ tied up overseas so if it needs to expand R&D that's a good segment to put that cash to use.

Yeah, but to be fair, the most obvious tie between the UK and Apple is Jony Ive. You mention Apple's increasing dependence on non-US revenue. Sure, but most of that does not come from the UK. And R&D does not need to be situated near where sales are made. The mentions of health-related services seems like a good bet. But, it's not THAT far out of the realm of possibility that perhaps Jony might want to spend more time in London and that, given his power at Apple, the company would accommodate him.

Hilarious. Is that an actual, no-photoshop street though? If so, where ?

I somehow doubt that the Cambridge R&D department is made for Ive. It looks more like for hiring local researchers and maybe collaborations with Cambridge/Oxford universities perhaps, plus close proximity to ARM. I don't think it's a design lab.

Overdue

Seems overdue to me. Cambridge is, and has been for many years, a great research centre and, as someone else pointed out, home of ARM. The QS World University Rankings places Cambridge University at number 2. Turing was an undergraduate and postgraduate there.

Also, you can go punting on the Cam wearing outrageous blazers! What more could you want?

Apple is doomed in the long term. Apple is trying to develop everything by itself. This will first hurt its partners and alienating existing ones. Because for each expansion new employees will work hard to promote themselves. But I don't think even as the largest high tech as Apple now, Apple can not create every future things by iteself. Apple's best future will be to cooperate closely with its best partners.

From what Apple is doing now, it seems Apple will follow the path of SONY. SONY once was a great coporation. It developed many technologies that are top of the class like Beta TV and that unique flash memory card, etc. But in the end consumers refused to pay the higher prices for its seemingly better technology.
