Apple has ordered more than 100 million of its "A15" chips to be produced by supplier TSMC, as it prepares to launch its upcoming iPhone 13 lineup, according to supply chain sources cited by CNBeta.

Apple is expecting the upcoming line-up to be high in demand and has reportedly asked its suppliers to boost production by more than 25% for this year's new iPhone. With the boost, the company's suppliers are expected to produce 100 million handsets, compared to the 75 million it initially produced for the 2020 iPhones. According to today's report, Apple has ordered 100 million A15 chips to be produced using TSMC's enhanced 5nm process.

The A14 chip powering the latest iPad Air and iPhone 12 are the first Apple-designed chips to be built using the 5nm process. The upcoming chips will continue to be based on the same technology and an enhanced version that will offer improved performance and power efficiency.

Today's report also claims that the upcoming chip will feature a six-core CPU with four high-efficiency cores and two high-performance cores. If true, the upcoming chip will feature the same CPU count as the existing A14 but will still provide performance and battery life improvements.

The power efficiency of the upcoming A15 chip will be critical on the higher-end models of the upcoming iPhone due to the rumored inclusion of a ProMotion display. Apple's ProMotion technology allows displays to refresh at a higher 120Hz refresh rate, which can be significantly power hungry. The high-end iPhone models may also feature always-on display capabilities.

A DigiTimes report earlier this year said that even with the addition of a ProMotion display, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will be 15-20% more power-efficient thanks to the A15 chip. On top of the improved chip efficiency, the upcoming iPhone is expected to feature larger batteries.

I wonder why it cant be 33% more than last year ? saying its more then 25% is like saying its more then 10% just with less of an error ..... its not hard to calculate the increase from 75->100 percentage wise.

Apple thinks the non-notch iphone users would upgrade to 13 just because of the 120hz display. But they are waiting for fingerprint ID instead of 120hz. Apple is making a huge mistake.

Mmmm... that's what I thought about last year's iphone. 5G didn't mean anything to me and everything else was just blah considering we couldn't really go anywhere to take photos. So a smaller notch and 120 refresh is at least something useful this year. I think you'll find there will be plenty of willing upgraders from iphone 8,X,XS series and maybe even 11.

This will be the 5th year of the notch. Talk about slow moving Apple.

I wonder what the special color will be this year? I hope it's brown. Dunno why but a metallic medium brown could be cool.

I don't care about the notch, or 120hz.

Fingerprint ID on the screen would be a big plus, and a reason I would more likely consider an upgrade as opposed to not.

The notch or 120hz will not drive me to an upgrade....

How are we not sure some of these 100 million A15 chips aren’t also being allocated to the next iPad Air? I suspect for this years iPhone Pro’s Apple is gonna pull a surprise and include the M1 chip to further differentiate it from the Mini and cheaper 6.1.

Apple is super slow (and steady?) There is virtually no difference between iPhone 11 and 12 Pros. And the 13 seems the same. Good news is you only have to upgrade every 5 years to make it meaningful.

I think Apple lost all interest in these sorts of claims when the iPhone mini sales did not match this massive demand that the whiners insisted was always there...

Lots of iPhone chips. Apple must be expecting a huge pent-up demand for iPhones.
Not really. Apple sells a million iPhones every business day...
This 100M will not be the total number manufactured; it's more like a compromise of negotiations between what Apple wants, what TSMC wants, and what the phone contract manufacturers feel they can deliver over the next few months.
