Apple Reportedly Orders 'Large Number' of Samsung Foldable Mobile Phone Display Samples

I see, Apple just starts exploring foldable display capabilities, I can't imagine how much prototypes looks in their labs, and might be interesting how they disguising while testing in public.

Funny that you referenced the notch. All the reviews I've seen say pretty much the exact same thing they said about the crease that they said about the notch: "You see it, you know it's there, but you don't pay attention to it after a while." Make of that what you will. I'm not interested in folding tech either, but I don't think the crease is going to be a deal breaker. I think foldables will fall into two camps: dual screen hinged devices like Microsoft's Surface Duo and actual foldable screened devices like Samsung's GFold 2. If Apple goes down that road, I wonder which way they'd go.

If they're called samples, they are for the labs. I wont be sure if I'm interested in a foldable iPhone or not until I see one, but I'd be disappointed if Apple wasn't looking closely at all of the available technology in the lab.

I can't conceive ever wanting or using this, but for those that do, I hope they come up with something exceptional - and if they can't, call it a day on the idea.

Regardless of price or how well it turned out, I just don't see the use for a foldable device. My pockets and pack are large enough, without having to feel like I need to accommodate for it. If I'm not put out now, why do I need something that is foldable? Would so rather they direct their efforts elsewhere..

Oddly enough this sarcastic comment did give me an idea, instead of a foldable phone, what about a rollable one? I imagine it’ll solve the crease problem.

Apple is a company now interested solely in increasing average selling prices. They’ve seen people buy Samsung crap for $2000 and want a piece of the pie figuring the hard of thought will pay double if it has an Apple logo.

Keep in mind that foldable displays doesn't mean a foldable phone and it doesn't mean the resulting product will be foldable. If you wanted to push the wearables market then displays that can be bent around an axis are something worth looking into.

This forum overwhelmingly called the iPad a gimmick. "Why would you need a giant ipod touch?" "lol it's just a bigger iPhone" "It would be way too big and cumbersome to hold!" And here we are ten years later with multiple companies pumping out tablets trying to catch up to Apple. You people are so adverse to any kind of change and the innovation that you claim you want, it's hilarious. Here are some pretty shortsighted comments from back then:

A tablet is so cumbersome to handle. How do you hold it, using your right hand? left? Place it in your lap? On the table? But then your view does not fall perpendicular to the screen. How would you type? Using both hands?

I am sure apple is smarter than that, and all their products have been innovative and kick ass, they wouldn't do just a tablet... maybe a two screen tablet/netbook using a touch screen interface that can be also used for a touch screen keyboard? I don't know?! But just a simple tablet would suck even if it comes from apple!

A lot of noise about nothing.

Apple would not use that particular screen in a commercial device. I sure as heck hope they would use it to experiment with UI ideas. Like Microsoft (the duo), my guess is they are developing their own screen/hinge technology, but its not there yet, so let the code folks play with Samsungs.

I’m sure Apple is experimenting with the technology. Makes perfect sense that they would do so. I, personally, do not anticipate wanting or purchasing a folding phone from Apple or anyone else unless they somehow come up with a use for it that’s truly amazing.

They will look at it. I doubt they would ever use Samsung technology in this case. I have to imagine it's not robust. I'd guess Apple has a better plan on what makes foldable devices actually useful.

have you used a galaxy fold? id love an iPad mini I can pocket honestly. I work a lot by myself and eat by myself and would enjoy having basically an iPad as a phone when I want it. gimmick? not to me.

I knew a response to my post like yours was coming my way. It's important to differentiate between a product being prime time ready vs. a proof of concept. I don't doubt that a technology like this may find it's way into Apple's product line in the future (or maybe a different technology will allow Apple to deliver the same functionality), but it's clearly just not ready yet. It's expensive and unreliable. I think they'll go the AR/Glasses route, but we'll see.

I counter your argument with the fact that Apple knew launching the iPad when they launched the iPhone never would have been successful, and likely called a gimmick. Timing is everything, and a folding Apple iPhone in 2020 just isn't right yet.

There are companies working on that. There doesn't yet seem to be a solution that creates a stable platform suitable for touch interactions.


And LG already have a rollable TV.
