Everyone understands the nature of the screens involved. Every choice is a compromise. Some people find the options opened up by a folding phone are worth the downsides of a less durable screen. You are willing to miss out on those options because there is more value to you in a more durable screen. I do understand why you would want your preferences to be available to you, but why so much anger over other people having access to products they enjoy?

Even if we don't care about other people, the more options that are available in general, the more likely we are to find something we really like. Plus, products you don't like now can still lead to products that you will love but can't forsee.

I’m not angry about people deciding they like the new folding screen phones. I’ve just learned my lesson with plastic screened devices years ago and won’t make that mistake again. You can’t make plastic scratch resistant or have the hardness of glass (without making it ridiculously thick), which doesn’t bode well for a device where you interact with it by touching the screen for everything you do on it. Steve Jobs said exactly this when he introduced the first iPhone and he was right. Plastic screens were one of the big negatives for most devices - especially those that required touch interaction.

Let’s come back to this discussion in 12 months and see just how well these devices hold up to everyday use. If I was a betting man, I would say that we’ll see another round of updates, but the screens will continue to be one of the big weak points in these devices.

As much as I think Microsoft’s latest two screened foldable seems to be crap as far as software and some hardware specs, I think they’re addressing the issue of a folding screen better. Even the sound they make when closing them seems of a higher quality, because it’s glass on glass. That really is more likely to be the future of foldables, if they’re going to have a future.

I’m definitely an Apple fan and own all their ****. But man, they have released the same thing every year and we all buy it because of “specs” improvements. The battery had gotten no better unless the phone is huge. Their is no design innovation. Makes me really apppreciate what Nokia did way back when. Sliders. Bar phones. Even lipstick case looking things. Gaming devices. Real choice and innovation. Apple has taken a shape which admittedly is very nice and ran with it for years in succession. Pro is It’s been great for resale etc so you can’t have it all.
I can’t wait for the iPhone 12. Hopefully it’s good :)

Consumers will gravitate to wearables and voice tech. This folding monstrosity is just a gimmick, at least in its current form.

This.

Foldable displays, in fact, any displays are just a temporary stepping stone until we get proper wearable gear working well. And that's just a stepping stone until we get some sort of brain interface working properly.

Why should I care about a phone display if I have something like a pair of glasses (not like a hololens, more like google glass but better), some headphones, etc.

Let me guess. Foldable phones by Samsung are a gimmick until Apple introduces them, just like OLED screens were a gimmick until Apple started using OLED displays.

No, foldable displays are a gimmick until they're used in something useful. A foldable phone that breaks easily and has a crease down the middle at 2x the cost is not what I consider one of those things.

If and when foldable tech does not have those compromises I'll consider it. But it is not ready yet and not used for anything really useful in my opinion.

Please no

I'd say foldable phones and tablets don't live up to Apple's quality and reliability standards

Perhaps that is the case. But I say that what others have done in the past shouldn't reflect on what Apple can do in the future.

Remember, Apple has a habit of pulling off what others couldn't:
  • iPod wasn't the first MP3 player
  • iPhone wasn't the first smartphone
  • iPad wasn't the first tablet
I had all three categories of devices prior to Apple's entries, and in all cases I ended up with Apple later because they were the first to get it right. Apple could very well make a great folding phone.

I don't see this working in a phone yet, to much wear and tear. It would be great for a rounded display in a VR or something else Apple is working on.

Yeah, I see curved displays like say, the inside of a VR helmet to be a much better application of curved/folding displays than a phone. The foldable phone has to be made of something flexible and when you fold and unfold something enough times it breaks, whether it is glass, plastic or steel...

Many here are saying they don't want an iPad that folds to the size of an iPhone, and I agree.

But even though that's been the model for foldables that have been released thus far (like Samsung's), I think the real potential for a foldable is for an iPhone that folds to half the size. Perhaps 10 years from now they'll have the technology to make such a phone not much thicker than a current iPhone. Then you actually could comfortably slip it into a pocket.

Oh I love this rendering with the notch on the foldable thing... so cute that notch! It will soon be to Apple what spoilers are to Subaru - similarly graceful and gently blending into the design.

No they won't as wearable tech is not showing much growth. The problem with wearables is that it doesn't fulfil major areas like people's want to watch TV shows/movies or game on their device. I still don't own a wearable and I'm massively into tech.

I *really* hope it's a bluff on Apple's side and they don't fall for the foldable device gimmick. 😂

I would like to see Apple's version of a fold, cause an iPhone that can turn into an iPad is what dreams are made off. The galaxy fold currently is just not elegant and still looks like prototype.

Everybody needs to calm down. If you are spending Billions on R+D, it makes sense to try a bit of everything. This purchase is not indicative of any new products.

Knowing Apple...they will use it in the least expected way, something like the touchbar or airpods

Hillarious. Can't help but LOL at all the blind loyalists trying to pretend to be not sold or convinced on a foldable, only because they've already mocked Samsung's devices. But all the while knowing full well, they're envious of Samsung's newest offerings in foldables and desperately are waiting for Apple to copy so they can say, "Apple waits for the tech to mature and perfect the new form factor. Now I see the light. These foldables are amazing and worth the premium price." The same way these loyalists pretended not to like big screens because they couldn't use one hand, but now... 🙄
and the amount of hatred for AMOLED oversaturated burn-in screens now perfectly absent after Apple started adopting the tech
