Earlier speculation suggested Apple would skip updating the Ultra every year, so I think this is an interesting development. I’m having a hard time imagining what upgrades could go into an Ultra 2. Maybe a better mapping experience during activities? New sensors? More buttons? Smaller form factor (please please please!)?

It’ll probably just be a new color way like space black or something.

I’m really hoping that multi-band GPS makes its way into the Series 9. It’s a battery suck, so it’d be remarkable if they’re able to make it work in the smaller watches. Right now that’s the only feature that keeps a Garmin on my wrist for trail runs. And I suppose the better mapping as well.

Ultra is a new generation wearable product - no chance they'd skip updating it annually. They can update the SoC and baseband at minimum. Right now, it uses the same Intel 14nm cellular modem as S4 and iPhone XS.

I’m hoping for 2 things. Bigger screen, air integration with scuba use. The first version doesn’t support wireless air integration. IMO Apple doesn’t make transmitters for air tanks. Oceanic however makes the software and transmitters. Either didn’t make deadline for first release, need new Apple Bluetooth protocol to save power or idiot product manager wants to quickly obsolete version 1 so divers buy new ultra. I will never buy version 1 of any Apple product since I was burned by purchasing the first intel macpro. Only to find sw support for most standard features (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc) required new hardware 💩

My hunch is that any Apple Watch Ultra update this year is a modest one, but possibly welcome. A new SoC that leads to better battery life or improved fitness/health sensor tech, for example. I also admit I'd like to see a stealthier model, one with a darker case and no brightly coloured buttons.

It’s possible that connection sensors are expanding. Someone above mentioned scuba air tank integration. My immediate thoughts are ANT+ for the power/ speed/ cadence numbers in cycle workouts.

That would make sense, at least. Every "professional scuba diver tries the Apple Watch Ultra" story I've heard includes a complaint about the lack of air tank support. And yeah, ANT+ would really help with anyone who needs extra sensors for cycling or running.

Apple doesn't need to compete with the best dive sensors or fitness watches, but if it could completely replace an entry-level version of those devices while delivering a much better smartwatch experience, that'd be a victory in my book.

Apple is slowly making inroads to competing with the bigger names. I hope it gets a lot better though.

I think the upcoming topo maps and offline on phone are a huge step towards the Watch mapping.

Also cadence/ speed/ power are huge for biking.

It’s getting better, but you’re right it’s still not there. I bought a bike computer about a month prior to WWDC. I really only needed speed and cadence, but it offers so much more than apple does.
The big things for me are the live track ability to that my widow can check on me, mapping, the screen, and Strava live segments.
