So at a digital glance my governmental records can be reviewed and clear me of any suspicion of anything, so I can get waved on board with nary a wanding, shoe check, or baggage x-ray? Great! No more Theatrical Security Airlines. Nice to have my 4th Amendment rights back. ...whadayamean, "no"?

innovation through acquisition.

apple, google, and microsoft aren't even trying anymore.

step 1: look around and see who is actually inventing cool new things
step 2: buy their company
step 3: shut down or phase out any free services attached to the company

it used to be mainly a google/microsoft practice. Now Apple's really stepping up its game.

Apple's philosophy has gone from "Think different" to "Acquire different".

No company (that isn't very small) can keep up to innovate in all areas necessary by themselves. It's impossible. To acquire talent and technology in areas you want to expand to is absolutely necessary..

The best would be to add user profiles to the iPad, and have it autodetatect the user with the camera, and have it unlock right to your separate user profile screen. The iPad is so good at keeping resources light, it could all happen almost instantly.

Great now we're literally fk'd Thanks for these nerdy developers probably so desperate they sold it to the corrupt united states Government...

this is sooo creepy.... dont wanna know where this is gonna end. :( just imagine a police officer in 2015 holding his mobile device up and screening the crowd passing by, and he could just see floating above your head every little detail about you: unpaid tickets, your address, your criminal record, just anything that is saved in a big government database...

dont even need to dig that deep in my fantasy. in two years you can just scan the girl sitting at the table next to you in your favourite restaurant, and you will know who she is from her facebook profile.

IDK about you guys, but my iPhone is pretty secure. I know my PIN for getting into my iPhone like the back of my hand, I use it in one or two other places, excluding my bank account. ^.^ There really is no way for anyone to get into my iPhone, because I also set the auto-wipe on 10 failed attempts, which should never be a problem, because I rarely ever fail more than 3 times on bad days. 10 times for someone who knows their PIN is rather unheard of.

Having the choice of face recognition or a PIN, or maybe even both at the same time, would be pretty neat. I'm sure many businesses with security concerns would require both to be enabled.

EDIT: And as for Apple innovating through acquisition... It's the smart thing to do. If Apple wants to expand into another area, they have two choices. Create their own technology, or buy/license an existing technology which has tremendous potential. Apple, in fact, does both. They don't make their own graphics cards, never have, same with harddrives/DVD drives/etc. There's a lot of tech they either licensed or bought. But there's also a lot that they created themselves. I forget the name, but it was an Apple engineer who created the first prototype "multitouch" trackpad. It used a camera to track the fingers I believe... Multitouch is arguably one of Apple's greatest inventions, since it's something that virtually every laptop manufacturer has attempted to copy. The iPhone wouldn't be the way it is without it as well.

EDIT: Sorry, apple might not have invented multitouch, i'm not certain... But they did definitely get it right when they implemented it, regardless.

I'm hoping this will enable user accounts on iOS devices. When the iPad gets a camera, if I pick it up, it will recognize me and only show my apps, mail, etc, and when my wife picks it up, all her stuff will be on the screen. It is sometimes difficult to share, but with iOS 4.2 we now have folders which helps keep our stuff separate. Except email!

So this probably sounds like dumb question, but how do I "un-unify" our inbox? Her emails mixed up with mine is not a fun time. I could have swore I saw a setting for it on my iPhone before. Anyone else rocking 4.2?

Give us accounts Apple! At least on iPad.

Very cool but also very creepy.
Maybe if you could turn it to anonymous mode for when you're in public, and then people can request to know your name and see your profile.
I mean, otherwise someone could just bust this out on a train and then they have your name, they could use that to find your facebook, linkedin, last.fm etc, and eventually get a bit too much information.

I'd only use it if it had this type of anonymous feature, or I can switch it on and off.

iPhoto uses facial recognition licensed from Omron. It's very processor intensive and unsuitable for the iPad.

Polar Rose's solution is already ported to iOS and has great performance and accuracy.

If face recognition in iPhoto and Aperture are any indication, Omron's technology sucks. The implementation is practically unusable with photo libraries of any reasonable size. Apple bought some crap with that one, probably just to get the feature out the door. :p

I'm thinking (and hoping) that Polar Rose is the replacement facial recog mojo Apple needs just to bring iPhoto and Aperture up to a satisfactory implementation of that much-hyped feature.

This was the first thing I thought. Cool tech, but kinda scary at the same time. At the moment I'll bet the performance is spotty at best, but the ball is rolling.

Social networking was such an amazing thing at first; but I've really had to adjust the way that I use it.
