so there still a need for another device to charge your watch??
i like that smartphone who can charge from the sun or artificial light and you dont need any other devices to carry after you, not even a charger. THATS a TRUE charging technology

OMG! And wake up with a fried brain. I suggest you pick up and digest a good book on how electromagnetic radiation works.

Exactly. The short-distance Qi is the way to go - even that would be significantly better than anything cabled. And, as I've explained above, it's (with other manufacturers) a well-established, working and (in users' homes / workplaces / bars / restaurants etc.) ubiquitous technology.

If Apple go the Qi way, the same pad could be used to charge any Qi-compliant device - not only the iWatch.

Do you think Apple would go Qi? Or would they do another lightening connector concept where they "evolve" the standard, patent their version and then seek lots of licensing revenue from all of the pad makers to be able to support Apple's version? Personally, I'd fully expect them to develop their own wireless charging standard for this reason… not because they can do wireless charging better but because the licensing revenue is desirable and they can flex their iDevice customer reach to pressure adoption of alt standards.

You are absolutely surrounded by it 24-7. For example, visible light is electromagnetic radiation for Pete's sake! There is harmful electromagnetic radiation and harmless electromagnetic radiation. It all depends on the wavelength. I very respectfully suggest you read a basic book on electromagnetic radiation.

It looks like Tim's got an iWatch and is hiding it! :)

It looks like they all are apart from Dr Dre or whatever he calls himself. Perhaps he is still in the doghouse?

This sounds interesting. :) My first thought that came to mind was that it was like my Citizen eco drive but that's light powered.

Apple Reportedly Testing Wireless Charging Coils for iWatch Ahead of Fail Launch

In other wireless charging news, a chip that allows the use of all current Wireless Standards? I know this is too new for it to be in a fall Apple product but it would be nice.

http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/28/broadcom-universal-wireless-charging-chip/

I don't think anyone is currently working with 1m+ ranges for wireless charging, so if this report is correct than it would seem to be a new Apple standard for wireless charging.

i dont even consider this "wireless" and saves me about 1 second on the ugly lumia i got from my uni. honestly as long as it doesnt magically start charging by itself once you enter its range of lets say the equivalent of bluetooth i am not interested in "wireless" charging on a PHONE.

for a watch it would be okay to just leave it on a desk to charge i guess though

YOU are not interested. A lot of other people would certainly welcome wireless charging in the iPhone.

What about strong 50 Hz fields' causing cancer - homes under long-distance, high-Voltage wires? It's low-freq but is still reported to have damaging consequences.

Such as...? I haven't heard much of anything particularly interesting about this so far. Largely the lack of rumors about a killer app for it are what has me both interested (because I can't imagine Apple launching without a killer app) and bored (come on, how many articles on this are going to be written? All that's been said is vague things about how it'll track your health).

Well, there have been dozens of rumor posts on these forums, but I am interested in the health monitoring capabilities that have been speculated upon following the spate of hirings of world class experts that Apple has recently done in this area. I would bet that Apple would sell only something that goes well beyond what Nike, Fitbit and lately Samsung have done.

No one gets it right like Apple. I'm sure it will be a superior product with awesome capabilities!

Beats (wireless ear/headsets etc), music (in cloud), iOS smart home etc will be integrated or play key roles with iWatch which will have capability of secondary or backup solar battery.

iWatch will be like a watch, internet, iPod, health tracker ... in one.

This will be Tim Cook's legacy not unlike Steve Jobs' the iPhone - iPod , a phone, internet ... All in one legacy.

IWatch wireless charging must have a range of about 1.5 meters. You have the charging device on your nightstand and it charges while you sleep without ever taking the watch off.

Do people really wear watches to bed? A charging station on the nightstand sounds perfect... I'll take it off and lay it on the charger when I go to bed. I hardly see that as inconvenient.

It will be an understatement to declare that I am very excited for the upcoming WWDC!

Wireless charging is simply magnetism at roughly the same strength as the earths magnetic fields.

The significance of a wireless charging “smart watch” is they could avoid open ports/connectors, seal up the case like a traditional watch - use BT and/or NFC for communication/audio/sync - then they could make it waterproof (even something like 10 meters would be outstanding).

Exactly. As long as i have to put on some case or anything its not ready for general use.

Regarding battery life I always wondered why the "clock" part of the display couldn't be passive. Like a cool metal rotating ring on the outside of the round display.

This way you can use it as a watch without the display being turned on.
Notifications would light the display automatically.

Maybe a motion sensor could work, but I doubt this is reliable. because you move your wrist all the time.

With a passive clock design, battery would be preserved as long as no "smart" feature.

Motion-based charging would also be possible, but would increase the thickness of the watch body.
