7 for 1 split means that if you currently own 1 share of stock and the value is $700, then it becomes 7 shares with a value of $100 each. The total value of your shares remains the same.

Dividends will also be adjusted and are typically calculated as a percentage of the individual share price.

This is the best news I have heard in a while and something I have been waiting for for a long time. While it has no realistic change, the mental change can be huge, as individual investors would be far more willing to buy 10 shares for $500 vs 1 share for $500.

And awesome quarterly results.

I do not think this will have much of an effect. MSFT has been in a dumpster for for many years with stock priced below $30. There is very little companies with such high capitalization can do. I also believe that it is more likely that iPhone sales will follow iPad sale trend than the opposite.

I'm curious to know the reason behind the iPad miss. Supply constraints or people aren't buying. I find that really curious. It will be interesting to hear what they say.

As for the stock split - splits are largely meaningless. They don't affect the value of the company. The dividend will be 1/7 of what it is now. About the only advantage is that buying a few shares will be a bit more accessible at ~$75 instead of ~$525 for people who don't buy large chunks at a time.
Supply constraints? No way.

iPhone sales beat handily and iPad sales missed badly. I wonder how the Street will take it. 7:1 is an odd ratio for a stock split.

It's a lot easier to understand if you've lost 3 fingers in an industrial accident.

I remember buying Apple stock in 2008 when it was in the high $70s... too bad the new price isn't ridiculously undervalued as it was then.

To me the fly in the ointment is the increasing lack of diversification - which also explains the iPad miss and weaker guidance. Virtually all of Apple's growth comes from the iPhone, and that has to be worrisome given the shift away from carrier subsidies in the USA (ie. iPhone becomes much more expensive compared to some rivals). It puts significant pressure on the competitiveness of the iPhone 6 and/or a big market for wearables.

great figures and I doubt they could have been much better unless apple had released a new product category.

Larger iPhone is going to make this next year much much much much bigger though. it might make for an uncomfortable spike in profits that causes some very weird trading to happen.

I think the iPad and mac suffer from the same issue of long long life cycles where as phones seem to have a 2 year cycle and people almost always upgrade because their contracts are too expensive monthly so stay on for long without upgrades. It's genius really! If apple can introduce proper apple tv, large iPhone and an watch we are gonna see some spectacular numbers next year.

Time to "Back up the truck."

Yay I'm getting more shares. And Wall Street just sent AAPL up by 8%.

I, too agree with many others here that having the share price under $100 will definitely generate many more buyers to Apple shares. :D

Is it psychological, heck yes! BUT, it works miracles on stock prices over time when the company is strong. Apple is way strong with lots coming out in the very near future. :D

When a physicist computes a rocket trajectory, and rocket somehow flies off predicted course, then we say that physicist failed to predict trajectory.
It's the same with analytics. It's not Apple who beat or miss expectations, it's the analysts who are dumb and make broken models which fail to predict Apple's behaviour. But to mask their own uselessness they present it as "Apple beating expectations" etc.
If we look objectively, financial analytics should not exist at all, because it simply unable to do it's supposed job.

So do you think we get the dividend before or after the split?! Because that goes from 3.29(x) to 3.29(7x) (Forgive me if thats wrong, Its been a long times since i've been in a math class...)

Wall Street “took” it by spiking AAPL 8% to $565. The results blew away analyst’s predictions any way you look at it. Unless, of course, you are one of those glass always half empty types.

The dividend also gets cut by 1/7 when the shares split. Long time, indeed. :D

Looks like iPod is on it's last legs - I just wonder when apple will cut the iPod :(

I don't think they will. Three reasons why Apple won't cut the iPod:
1. The iPod is an Apple classic. It's arguably what Apple back in the game. For strategic reasons, Apple will want to keep the iPod.
2. There is still a market. The market may be shrinking, but it won't disappear.
3. It's an easy way to recover R&D costs. Consider the premium feel of the iPod touch. I'm quite certain that the iPhone 6 will look a lot like the current iPod touch.

How can iPhone sales be so good when they all run iOS 7? :D

Why can’t we just ignore all those types. Nothing Apple does is good enough for them anyway. Let them wail away about how crappy iOS 7 is in their warped opinions. Let them stay on iOS 5 or 6 until their batteries melt. They are in the tiniest minority, voices fading into the ether.

I really really have no clue what any of this means.

I have a cousin who when I asked if she liked iOS 7 she just said... its the same but it looks kinda nicer. I have a feeling she's the majority. She has no experience with UI design and all she does is text, surf the web (presumably safari), email a tiny bit, go on her favorite social networks, and call her friends. She does however carry a mophie juice pack so I assume longer battery life would be a big reason for her to pick up a newer iPhone.

Question. So if I have 5 shares of AAPL, is there anything I have to do to benefit from this news of splitting?
