It ideally is a case by case basis, but I think hybrid is the best approach for a blanket solution

If people are objectively (i.e. evaluated by their boss) better at home, then I have no problems with them wfh

For obvious reasons its much healthier to work in an office. Going to the office forces you to do one very important thing….move.

Very important.

Socalizing.

Moving.

Testing the products together face to face.

If you just sitting at home you can go mad like a person in prison.

So many divorces and abuses happened during lockdown because couples had to spend unnatural level of time together.

You should only see your family, partner, kids at essential moments otherwise you all fight over small things.

You have to have diversity of people to interact with so you are always learning to socialize with many different forms of people.

Just gonna grab some popcorn so I can read how amazing people who WFM are and how productive they are and they never do anything but work
Lol I’m a damn good worker but I will be honest my LG 34in monitor excepts dual external inputs. I regularly split screen with my Xbox and game 1/3 or more of the work day. Like I said, my work still gets done, but there is some distraction that goes on throughout the day.

Pre-pandemic I was hopeful that companies in the future could allow for most office employees to work from home. But then the Apple employees proved how to NOT work productively from home by totally trashing every OS the company has. So I now know WFH won’t work, at least not for Apple employees. Too bad, as working from home would have kept a lot of polluting cars off the streets a bit more, thereby helping a dying planet live a little longer.

Very clever username :)

What is your profession? Some professions can do WFH just fine… but not all.

My profession is design and it 100% is better in person to collaborate with others face to face, and take advantage of the spontaneous conversations and problem solving sessions that come about from random encounters and walking down to talk to coworkers for either intended business questions/comments or socializing that inevitably ends up as work talk.

Also, I really have to question what the perception is of “best work ever WFH”: what are the metrics? Whose opinion counts for what is “best work ever”?

I suspect that your (and others’) opinions are wearing rose tinted glasses of “best work ever” from home. Maybe it feels like it, but in reality is not from a company view point.

Maybe the metrics for “productive” are different from company’s viewpoint and employees’ viewpoint.

You're free to question. I stand by what I said.

I guess Apple's HR team didn't learn a thing when their ML guy left. Well, let's see if Apple can still maintain these old school thinking in the new age. As a tech company, it's really backward looking and embarrassing to still require people to go into office.

If Apple says anything about Facetime features in their keynote, they should be ashamed of themselves. Obviously Apple has low faith in their own tech that they still want people sitting in the office like lemmings.

Non-contiguous office days make zero sense to me. I get that some people like to WFH to avoid a commute, but for me WFH gives me the opportunity to travel to see friends and family while still working. I’m going into my office most days I’m at home, but I enjoy being able to take 4-5 day trips to see family without needing to rush out on Friday evening and back on Sunday night. I’m someone who is happy to work a 2-3 day in office schedule but if I need to be in Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday that doesn’t do me a lot of good. Glad I work where I work.

Gas prices. They've got to keep the space ship occupied

Alright, but high upper management has to lead by example… Tim, Eddy et al have to go 3x a week to that Apple Park too. And no, don’t want to hear “but they don’t NEED to be in person” as it has been deemed as an invalid explanation by the experts around here.

Me too, gonna grab some for how people that go to work are always working and never chatting on the hallways, or blasting time in meetings about meetings or taking long lunches… it’s all 100% efficient, bug-free, never delayed outcomes.

Like, for real, everything was perfect and on time before COVID /s.

I don't understand why people on this forum are so against people wanting to work from home. Okay, so you wouldn't do it, but why make fun of others wanting to do it and why belittle it?

I legitimately did the best work of my life during WFH. I miss it.

I think most of those that don't either a) are people who enjoy going into the office for the social aspect or b) are managers who are resistant to change.
Here’s just a theory… some old school thinkers had to suffer hours of commute, gas costs, the pr*ck manager breathing down their necks daily and more. All for the great prize of having that closed separated corner office by sacrificing health, exercising time, family time, etc (basically all those hours wasted going and coming back stuck in traffic) for some decades.

So they are resented, they can’t get it in their heads that maybe there’s a better way… they also have to make their underlings watch their flashy corner closed space office. There’s also a lot of stuff that happens in-person that it’s impossible to happen over network communications… so they can’t make up stuff, they can’t say that an employed raised the voice too much or anything really for an easy consequence-free layoff.

The outcome? THEY HAVE to shove it up everybody’s daily lives, “I suffered, you suffer too… also check my office while at it” mentality.

I can’t roll my eyes enough at the unnecessariness of many job positions to be forced to be at a far away office.

I’ve been fortunate enough in my life to have always worked from home (aside from frequent business travel). But in my case, it’s a blessing. I’m just a pain in the ass to be around for extended periods. Most jobs don’t allow for this “pain in the ass factor” though, and you do what the job requires — period.

Don’t like it? Find another place to work. They’re not running out of companies…

Yeah, I've never been healthier than I have been the past 30 months - at least since my early 20s before I got tethered to a desk, in a cube. It's amazing what you can do when you gain back 2 hours in your day, 5 days a week. Important things like... moving. Eating fresh meals.
