You'd think apple met its own group of outer space alien life force or something; its amazing all this technology they have on their hands. The really cool things like sending photo's and face to face talking; not scrambling around in an OS to get **** done, only the nerds knew how to do this **** back in the day and now apple brings it to use in real life. No confusion or thought process, its just there!

This would be sorta neat, but a misplaced or stolen phone would be much more unsettling if this were all that was needed to log in. expecially if 'they' managed to get the phone and the computer.

there are apps like this that work based on proximity, so i know it has utility, but it is interesting to think about how much and when that utility diminishes and when it is outright a bad idea.

I don't think some of you guys get this. The visual data is not for the main part of the communications. It is for public/private key negotiation, much like SSL only safer. After all the keys are generated, communications will take place by 802.11, blue tooth or whatever.

Surely Bluetooth already offers a more versatile means of implementing this?

Exactly. It's just another way to do it.

But as far as I understand, Apple will not be using any of this or NFC(no idea how it really works; not researching in NFC for now) or bluetooth.

I am pretty sure, Apple has invested a lot in AirDrop. The communication is based on wireless network hardware built into the phones. Maybe, that itself is similar to the way NFC work.

Apple's definitely coming up with something like AirDrop (in my opinion); iOS may also include AirDrop communications b/w a Mac OS X and an iOS device.

Exactly, clearly people don't read anymore. 802.11 and BT will still be used for file transfers, but this could pair BT and authenticate the session. Could be much smoother than the other methods of authenticating a data transfer like this.

Hello

"Hello! I'm an Iphone"

"Hello! I'm a Macbook Pro"

"Lets destroy all humans!"

"You Betcha!"

Well, I'll admit I've done little more than look at the picture in the first post.

But... I fail to see how two cameras and screens exchanging keys is any safer or more convenient (quite the opposite?) than the devices doing it transparently - The whole point in public/private keys on the protocols you use every day in your browser/wireless/etc/etc/etc is to safely authenticate over insecure connections?

I was thinking of developing something like this where the phone displays an image which identifies it and the camera picks it up (and then communications continue over the network). I didn't read the full patent, so maybe there is more to it (maybe the invisible ink part is kinda clever), but seems like yet another obvious idea that doesn't deserve a patent.

How's this any better than existing handshake methods?

Looking at the patent application, and I think that this is:

- just ephemeral key exchange and not much different
than what happens at the start of an HTTPS session
(excluding the CA authentication)

- an obvious invention (and shouldn't have been
granted a patent)

- is slower and less convenient than doing your ephemeral
key exchange (and any further data exchange) over wifi or
infrared or bluetooth or proximity RF (like a smart card)

- and AFAICT offers no advantage over an other existing
method of ephemeral key exchange

But it sounds really high-tech.

Only the nerds knew how to select "Share by Bluetooth" and "Make video call"!? Give me a break.
