I hope the next couple years Apple integrates TouchID into the screen and the home button can slowly go away.

It would be a huge change, but eventually phones will only be a screen.
I guess you've not used a windows or android phone in the last 3 years.

Touch ID also have issues with freshly washed hands that haven't been perfectly dry, but this is a minor gripe as Touch ID works fine the rest of the time.

Simple. have the touch ID on the back of the phone. You can just use your index finger to rest it. Imagine the 2014 Moto X has a Touch ID sensor on its giant M logo.

My nexus 5 has no buttons on the screen. the home "button" is integrated onto the bottom if the touch screen.

The is correct, but nexus counts for a very small amount of android.
The 4 button is pretty standard at the moment, but I agree things are moving toward button-less.

I'm all for it. The Android on-screen buttons are superb IMO.

Hardware buttons fail, take up valuable real estate, and look dated.

So you're saying because physical switches have been around for a long time, they're "dated"? Please.

I can reach into my pocket and know my phone is on silent by flicking the switch. I can likewise adjust the volume without looking at my phone. Virtual, on-screen controls are very useful, to be sure, but to insist that physical switches and buttons are "dated" is just idiotic.
