Not exactly a "green" initiative, is it. Meanwhile, we're moving toward devices that go all day on a full charge and easily charge in a small portion of the overnight hours. So what "problem", exactly, is Apple trying to solve? This seems like technology simply for its own sake. Dear Apple: Are you running out of real problems to solve? I'm sure anyone of us here on MR could come up with a list, if you need help. iCloud, Siri, arbitrary NFC limitations, etc., etc. - it's a considerable list, to be sure. JMHO.
I honestly quite often put my phone there and think it'd be cool for a MacBook to be able to Qi charge it.I’ve always thought something like this would be a good idea
You’re resting your palms wrong 😁As cool an idea as that is, that's where I rest my palms. . .
Who's to say they won't?I would rather have this on the top of a Mac mini so I can set my phone down on my Mac to charge. Even the base of the iMac stand could be convenient, wireless charging for the Magic Keyboard and Mouse wouldn’t be bad to go with that either.
What is all this "wireless charging" nonsense where everything has to physically touch.
wireless charging at it's absolute max is up to 90% efficient, practically probably 80-85%, so that not very "green"Not sure what you're driving at. why is it less 'green' than anything Apple does? Devices need charging.
He didn't miss the point. Apple are doing this in part because they're working on erasing ports entirely, which remains a bad idea, and in part to "unify" charging processes, which could be achieved by putting a standard connector on all devices.
It was a relevant observation.
I think the new Magsafe was a response to the people that have issues with charging pucks that when they put their devices on it, it just misses the sweet spot. I've had it happen a few times. Drop the iPone onto it, the charging light goes on, yet in the AM, the iPhone isn't charged. It's worse with the Apple Watch, because it tends to want to chime all night. Yippee...I don't really see much merit in having a bunch of devices covering up my palm rests sliding around while I'm trying to use my MacBook Pro. But I like the idea of something like an iPhone being able to charge my Apple Watch or AirPods Pro. I could see them put this in the iPhone Pro to get people to upgrade.
Also, a Qi charger on the iPad seems weird, but I think MagSafe was kinda designed for that. Helps you line it up easier on a huge device. I think I'd like MagSafe charging on the iPad.
But the patent is to protect the idea.Don't think Apple will implement these anytime soon. Hard pass on those patents.
It won't work. We will see PC's with this option as well, eventually. Patents are a joke anymore. But the patent is to protect the idea.
That won't be a laptop... that will be a lap incinerator.
Seriously Apple... get the basics working better, first. Going to GaN charger blocks is a step in the right direction. But get the device coils and charging circuitry to be more forgiving and better performing, also. The failure of AirPower tells me you're still a long way off in that regards.
Maybe the reason they didnt release air power was because they changed their minds and wanted to implement it in other places instead. Maybe they do have the technology right.Oh boy now we get to listen to rumors about this being announced “just around the corner” for the next few years till people realize this doesn’t make any sense and if they can’t get AirPower right how the hell will this work.
Agreed. If I am going to set something on my MacBook to charge it, which will prohibit me from using said MacBook, why wouldn't I just charge it elsewhere while using the MacBook.the more I think about this, the less sense it makes ... how would one use the MacBook while charging another device? you wouldn't, so quick charging while on a 5 min coffee break? or over night?
it's a patent, nothing more ...

It’s possible.Maybe the reason they didnt release air power was because they changed their minds and wanted to implement it in other places instead. Maybe they do have the technology right.
Please bring it! This is such a innovative feature.
M1 - Silicon Chip + Wireless Charging Mac = Pure Innovation.
