Contrary to what many of you are stating...let me fix your reply with a simple “no”.

Not exactly a "green" initiative, is it. Meanwhile, we're moving toward devices that go all day on a full charge and easily charge in a small portion of the overnight hours. So what "problem", exactly, is Apple trying to solve? This seems like technology simply for its own sake. Dear Apple: Are you running out of real problems to solve? I'm sure anyone of us here on MR could come up with a list, if you need help. iCloud, Siri, arbitrary NFC limitations, etc., etc. - it's a considerable list, to be sure. JMHO.

Not sure what you're driving at. why is it less 'green' than anything Apple does? Devices need charging.

I would rather have this on the top of a Mac mini so I can set my phone down on my Mac to charge. Even the base of the iMac stand could be convenient, wireless charging for the Magic Keyboard and Mouse wouldn’t be bad to go with that either.
Who's to say they won't?

the more I think about this, the less sense it makes ... how would one use the MacBook while charging another device? you wouldn't, so quick charging while on a 5 min coffee break? or over night?
it's a patent, nothing more ...

This is an interesting concept. I'm not a fan of the magnetic aspect of the MagSafe charger for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I might as well plug it in at this point. The Qi charger I had for the 11 Pro Max was better since I simply set my iPhone on it at night and picked it up in the morning. There wasn't anything to disconnect or pull apart from the iPhone. The good news is, after I return the MagSafe charger it will be $39 less for Apple to add to their coffers :)

I don't really see much merit in having a bunch of devices covering up my palm rests sliding around while I'm trying to use my MacBook Pro. But I like the idea of something like an iPhone being able to charge my Apple Watch or AirPods Pro. I could see them put this in the iPhone Pro to get people to upgrade.

Also, a Qi charger on the iPad seems weird, but I think MagSafe was kinda designed for that. Helps you line it up easier on a huge device. I think I'd like MagSafe charging on the iPad.

He didn't miss the point. Apple are doing this in part because they're working on erasing ports entirely, which remains a bad idea, and in part to "unify" charging processes, which could be achieved by putting a standard connector on all devices.

It was a relevant observation.

I think you are right. Removing all ports would be the reason to go to this type of charging on everything. Bluetooth earbuds, Bluetooth keyboards, mice, and touchpads. It's going to be a completely closed system. They had better be working on their own wifi system, and enhanced security if they are going to dump us all on the ether for everything.

Maybe they need to come out with their own type of wifi like communications, as Bluetooth kinda sucks, and ANT+ is useless, and with no ports, people making adapters to plug ported tech into to connect to Apple systems are going to make a lot of money, and potentially a lot of people a lot less secure. Yippee...

I think the new Magsafe was a response to the people that have issues with charging pucks that when they put their devices on it, it just misses the sweet spot. I've had it happen a few times. Drop the iPone onto it, the charging light goes on, yet in the AM, the iPhone isn't charged. It's worse with the Apple Watch, because it tends to want to chime all night. Yippee...

That won't be a laptop... that will be a lap incinerator.

Seriously Apple... get the basics working better, first. Going to GaN charger blocks is a step in the right direction. But get the device coils and charging circuitry to be more forgiving and better performing, also. The failure of AirPower tells me you're still a long way off in that regards.

Interesting... The failure of ROKR told me Apple was on to something big. I guess that worked out OK.
.

Oh boy now we get to listen to rumors about this being announced “just around the corner” for the next few years till people realize this doesn’t make any sense and if they can’t get AirPower right how the hell will this work.
Maybe the reason they didnt release air power was because they changed their minds and wanted to implement it in other places instead. Maybe they do have the technology right.

Agreed. If I am going to set something on my MacBook to charge it, which will prohibit me from using said MacBook, why wouldn't I just charge it elsewhere while using the MacBook.

I agree 100%

I can only imagine a Qi charger build in the iMac stand. There is no practical explanation for charger build in a laptop like on the drawing. I would like to mention about earlier attempts for wireless charging with transmitter. It could be just more than great to get charged all my devices (mouse, keyboard, watch, iPhone and so on) when they just rest on my desk close to iMac.

Please bring it! This is such a innovative feature.

M1 - Silicon Chip + Wireless Charging Mac = Pure Innovation.

Pure innovation if you want a little inefficient space heater instead of functioning devices! One of the great benefits of the M1 is the much better thermal performance of the chip itself in the case so lets not counteract or ruin that by placing charging coils all over the laptop. I get that this is not a final design but not very good placement of the coils if I want to work whilst charging, they would be better placed on the top of the lid for an end of day / overnight solution if anything.

It was a bit this, but more than a response, it was pre-empting the complaint that when everything is "wireless" (Qi) charging, you won't be able to use your phone while it's plugged in. MagSafe means you can Qi charge and use your phone at the same time, they're just teaching us to do this before they remove the lightning port entirely in probably 2022.
