I've been cranky on apple HW developments (dropping ports, less configurable), but I'll keep coming back if they keep fighting for our privacy. Thanks Apple.

I call BS on the 6 Trade and Marketing organizations. I work in digital marketing and when I look at the analytics 50% of the people are browsing using the private browsing modes. My guess is that of the other 50% many would choose to the same setting if they knew how or even knew it existed. People want their privacy, especially since the Patriot Act took pretty much all of it away.

The advertising people's stated objections seem to hold no water, as this is an optional thing. If they truly care about respecting user-controlled preferences* and believe we all prefer targeted ads then no-one will choose to use this feature, will they? :)

Well done Apple.

*I had to type this statement three times before I stopped laughing.
Scrolled down just to make sure someone mentioned this.

Also, I don't know why they did this. Even if they made a reasonable argument, which they didn't, everyone hates them anyway. Now they're just making sure everyone knows to use Safari's anti-tracking mode.

I'd be more impressed if Apple stopped accepting $3B/year secretly from Google for allowing them to be the default search engine on iOS.
It's not a secret if you know. Also, I'd be annoyed if they did this because the other search engines majorly suck. They already give people the option to change if for some reason they want the crappy results from Yahoo!.

Good for Apple. I really respect their commitment to privacy and security regardless of other things they’re doing that I don’t like.
Eh, I think it mostly has to do with their incentives. Apple surely wouldn't be doing this if they were profiting from ad tracking. So I don't see a reason to praise Apple for this, but I have another reason to keep using Safari.

Just downloaded Safari 11 and that option is not available in the privacy preference pane. Did Apple back down or is High Sierra needed for this feature?

I am using the internet since the year 2000. In this 17 years i only actively clicked on an advertisement 2 times as much as i remember.

And i never bought something after i saw an online advertisement.

Not even one single buy in 17 years! Online ads are only an annoyance and at least in my case they just don’t work.

Same here. Sometimes i wonder if they are fooling us by making such a fuss then in the reality they back down no matter what... SAD.

Yet the ads pay for places like this, where you can complain about them for free.

Ditto for TV ads, which pay for shows, and are targeted at that particular show's audience.

Google already has a fix for this so don't worry, you will still see re-targeting ads from advertisers :)

I don't why people bring up Google so much. There are literally hundreds of companies which track our internet use. Google could disappear tomorrow and we'd STILL see targeted ads all over the place.

Ever notice that most ads have a little arrow symbol? That's just one association of two hundred companies which share who is targeted for what ad.

Apple thinks its users are naive. And they're right. (Just look at all the people who think this is about Google, or that it guarantees privacy.)

For example, this change only stops targeted ads after 24 hours of not going to the site that tagged you.

Doesn't stop all the other sites from doing the same for that long, or extending their time by passing on the info to other sites.

Because of marketshare. Google owns 75-80% of all search ads and about half of all online ads.

Google is only the first to find a fix. Other ad networks will find a fix as well. This is a cat and mouse game.
