I can share some insight on that

My work phone was upgraded from an iPhone 8 to a 2nd gen SE and the experience is horrible

The iPhone 8 has a superior camera, superior LCD screen and clarity, superior battery life, and better build quality... the SE feels so cheap in my hand

I can barely see this phone in the sunlight With its crappy screen contrast

It’s crazy how the difference is
Wait what, you got to be kidding right lol

I'd jump at a 8 Plus at that price. My mom has a 6 Plus and I wanted to upgrade her soon to get her a new Apple Watch which isn't supported on the iOS 12.x. She is a light user but she wants a big screen again with a home button, so that rules out the current SE because of size and the XR, 11, 12 etc. because of no home button.

I Still use my trusty 8 plus daily as backup when other people are around because of the fingerprint sensor not worrying about masks. Amazingly the battery is still around 80% and lasts the day.
The iPhone 8 Plus was superb value for money... I bought it when the iPhone X was released and don't regret a thing.

Thank you for the clarification.

It looks like when the iPhone 8 was announced Apple did not announce it with 128Gb in first place, thus added later.
They did the same with iPhone SE 2020... Was initially 64GB and 256GB then they dropped 256GB and replaced with 128GB...

Regardless of the value proposition of buying this now via Apple refurbished, the 8 is a fantastic phone that holds up fine to this day. Touch ID has served many well during the pandemic. And one of the last phones with 3d touch (RIP).

Apparently once it’s under 80, you get an battery warning in your battle health. My moms 8 plus hit 79% and she got a battery degrading warning lol

Based on my experience... yes I am

The SE is trash compared to the 8

Phone is not even a year old

A few months ago, I had Apple replace the battery on my iPhone 7 jet black 128GB. Light and relatively small. No case. All day battery life. I can use the apps I need. Bluetooth and cellular signal is fine. Still runs iOS 15. No intent to upgrade any time soon. Dunno about the price of the 8 here, but presume it will at least have OS upgrades available for another year.
I just got the battery replaced on my 8 Plus. I don't want to upgrade - because I love the 3D touch too much. I use it for art and for music composition. Really sad they gave up on it on the new models. Hope I can still use the 8 Plus for another year or so.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the iPhone 8 has ever been offered in 128GB. Only 64 and 256.

When it debuted with the iPhone X launch year it was 46/128/256GB I personally switched from the X in 14 days to a 256Gb iPhone 8.

This is a strange move by Apple especially since the SE2 has higher margins than the iPhone 8.
This means: people by this and add to AppleCare+ more will need to be internally recycled or manufactured,
leading to when complete stock for repairs is exhausted Apple will be forced to upgrade to a newer iPhone - remember the SE2 is going to be phased out and existing stock will need to be ready for warranty replacements for those owners.
- Also very odd since iOS 15.4 beta is now supporting FaceID WITH user mask ON, and without AppleWatch - paving the way where TouchID devices may not be sought after that much due to mask mandates. I feel this move should've been done in early 2021 not now.

So whom at Apple is making this flip-flop decisions? It's not making a linear or complimentary sense. Uggh.

The funny thing is, I *just* bookmarked the iPhone refurb page because I'd love to buy a refurbished 8 Plus. I'm still using one and it's just as useful/fast as it was the day I bought it, but it'd be nice to get a newer one with 2 more years of AppleCare. I hope this means they'll add that back to the refurb store soon! I'd be all over it.

Surprised you haven’t hit some walls with the 2gb of ram. Shows how well iOS still is with ram management. We got 16gb ram iPads to 2gb ram iPhones lol
Yeah, I don't really know what to tell you... Apple's done a good job? Use the 7 all the time for Apple mail, Outlook with a 20GB mailbox, a half dozen MFA programs, notes, imessage, photos, Safari, music, live TV programs using Bell Fibe, Apple TV+ for about another month, Crave (HBO), reddit, twitter, NYTimes, plus two important health programs that need to run in the background at all times (Dexcom and Sugarmate), works fine with my Apple Watch, and Airpod Pros.

I'm not testing it with any memory intense games, or artistic programs, but I figure that's better suited for an iPad anyway, where I think memory problems could be a bit more prevalent.

Apples price won’t valuate to most consumers who are considering a used-(refurbished) iPhone. Yes, the battery is replaced if it qualifies and the screen is replaced if necessary with an attached warranty, but I wouldn’t pay that price regardless. That’s way to high for an iPhone that released in 2017. Unless somebody really wants Touch ID, I would look at a new-er refurbished iPhone model.

It’s my opinion that the iPhone 8 Plus was AND STILL IS the “best iPhone ever made” when you take into account the horrible flickering that’s present on all OLED iPhones (no flickering on 8 Plus LCD).
The iPhone 8 Plus to this day still has the “best” display of any iPhone ever made, including the current ones.

iPhone 8 Plus price history:

Apple originally launched the iPhone 8 Plus in 2017 for $799 for 64GB and $949 for 256GB.

One year later, there was an iPhone 8 Plus price drop to $699 for 64GB and $849 for 256GB.

Then, alongside the launch of the iPhone 11, Apple officially retired the 256GB iPhone 8 Plus, introducing a new 128GB model instead. This was accompanied by an iPhone 8 Plus price drop to $549 for 64GB and $599 for 128GB. The iPhone 8 Plus was discontinued shortly after, coinciding with the release of the iPhone SE 2020in April 2020.

$349 for a refurbished iPhone 8 Plus is a super bargain- considering that you’re buying the best iPhone they make.
What flickering? I don’t see that at all…

Last year I went from my naked black iPhone 7 (battery had been replaced) to a naked blue 12 mini.
The difference is truly incredible, and in a smaller device. And the battery life on the 12 mini much longer.
I would seriously recommend going to the iPhone 13 mini as a replacement for an iPhone 7, as it is a step up from the 12 mini.

I too like to keep my phone as long as possible to maximise utility. But there is a time. I reckon you are getting there with an iPhone 7. Maybe wait till September to see what the iPhone 14 brings.

Yup, my moms iPad 5 was starting to show it’s age a bit. But it’s only got the dual core A9. She still uses it as a back up if she drains the battery on her iPad 9 lol.

No, the best iPhone ever made was the 6s+. A real home button makes it a bit nicer, but the headphone jack really knocks it out of the ballpark.

Disclosure: the first-generation Neural Engine in the A11 chip inside the iPhone 8 isn't sufficient to run certain iOS 15 features like live text, FaceTime backgrounds, etc. Those features require an A12 chip or later.

Oh I forgot about 3D Touch. Took me a while to get used to the software version and it was a struggle.

Yes I forgot about 3D touch on the 8/8+ also, I use(d) that all the time when hard pressing on the left side of the screen to access the multi tasker to switch between apps. In conjunction with 'rest finger' on home button (Touch ID) meant I literally never fully pressed down on home button to save it from wearing out over time. Fast forward to now, and my 8+ is in almost perfect condition!

To Apple: “… why, oh my! why?” Are you trying to scam unsuspecting customers? Seriously a 128GB SE is only $90 more and will last you at least two extra years, notwithstanding the additional features listed in this article. Apple, you should be ashamed of yourself!
