Uh, because it is PR, or are you blind enough to believe these companies do this because they're truly concerned with your kids' well-being?

Geez, I suppose I need to blame this on working in ad agencies for over a decade, but it'll never cease to amaze me how gullible the general public is.

riiiight. cause a tech company run by tech-lovers and enthusiasts with families and children of their own educating kids of their community about tech is IMPOSSIBLE to be anything but self-indulgent PR or the proliferation of Apple-Product Slavery.
maybe it's not a matter of gullibility, it's merely seeing things without categorical hatred of a company getting in the way? y'know, like a Normal Person....

you guys need to step away from the computer for a breather.

Well then thank goodness you are here to save us all from our stupid selves. Get over yourself and how you think you are so much smarter than everyone else. Does/could Apple benefit from this? Of course, but it doesn’t have to be an evil scheme. The bigger benefit for them is to get the foot traffic in the stores. It is the same as the Lowes/Home Depot kids building projects that they have in-store. I use them, and I fully understand what they are trying to do – get me in the store and maybe buy something while we are there. Do I understand this? Absolutely. Are others explicitly unaware of the stores’ motives? Perhaps, but what does it matter? Everyone still has the free will to make the final choice.

This is not brainwashing kids. It is providing a service where potentially everyone wins – the kids, the parents, Apple. But, by all means, please start a petition to get this horrible practice shut down because I am far too stupid to figure out what is going on.

All good, keep going.

As I said, this has nothing to do with Apple - other companies do this as well. If you think I'm some sort of enraged communist trying to preach for an anti-capitalist revolution, you'd think I'd find a more suitable platform than a tech discussion forum. You know, like a normal person.

Anyway, nevermind.

Sign up quickly, before asking your kid/gkid. These fill up in no time at all, by the time you ask him/her, there will be no spots left. If the kid/gkid doesn't want to do it, cancel, so that someone else will have a chance. My granddaughter did one a few years ago and loved it. She did the editing, I helped with the video, which starred her.

The groups are all FULL in most of the California Apple Stores. Was gonna sign up my niece, who loves her iPad Mini and tries to do her own home-movies with it. Too bad…. no spot left for her.

I only found out about this in this morning's MacRumors article. But it's already a day late.

This sounds super fun, I would have loved to go to something like this. Though, it would be great if they also offered math/science/engineering courses. We need to encourage kids that math and science can be as fun as making books, songs and movies.

LOLZ. "Enraged Communist". I love it. Gotta start using that one myself.

i wasn't bringing politics into this, it's more just a 'general attitude' kind of thing. any form of corporate altruism in an international spotlight will inevitably be good PR if the endeavor is managed properly, makes people/parents happy, and educates th' young-folk. i see what you're Saying - as it's not in any remote way difficult to understand - but what you're Displaying is that you think you're the only one who 'sees through the BS!' when this story (and others like it) is not, in reality, the same as what you seem to celebrate seeing through very un-rosey tinted glasses.

Can they make a camp for older college kids too? :p I want to join in on the fun. Come on Apple

While fun, you really aren't missing that much.
I have taken my kids the last two years (I took them a second year in case it was different year to year. It wasn't.)

It is more of a two day camp. The last day is watching the videos that the kids made. That means you have to sit through 5 minutes of a kid filming his dog, 8 minutes of a kid jumping on a trampoline, and 10 minutes of a kid walking through his house filming his furniture. It was painful.

The camp is run by the apple store staff. Most of them don't really have any grasp of movie making/pre-production - but try to talk to the kids about storyboarding. They do an adequate job of helping the kids with the tech though.

All the filming is supposed to be done at home.

It is good in the sense that it gets kids doing something over the summer. But if you want your kid to really learn how to make a 2 minute short film, there are better ways.

The kids do usually get a fun t-shirt, and apple flashdrive.

This was my experience - your milage may vary.

And that's exactly how this depraved, immoral system works - "THEY"(tm) lure unwary children and brainwash them with "THEIR" iProducts. Your brain soon would have been trained to use Apple products exclusively since "THEY"(tm) have sophisticated education programs that are highly effective on rewiring the brain in order to respond to "THEIR" products only.

Actually there have been first sightings of victims that have been conditioned to feel physical pain in the presence of competitor's products. Clearly this child is going through extreme pain caused by the presence of a laptop running Windows 8.

Now you would think that the reaction towards a Macbook would be totally different and very pleasant. Yes, ultimately that will be the result but the process itself is cruel and despicable. Here is a rare image of a child in the midst of a typical brainwashing session. Notice the apathy in the girls eyes while the Macbook is reconditioning her brain. All of the brain's capacity is occupied by focussing on the software and shiny aluminium casing, the term "zombie" comes to mind. In 15 years she will be standing in line for the New iPad 23 and iPhone 18S without ever having made a conscious decision to buy these products.

Clearly this is highly unethical, unfortunately nobody can do anything against it right now, it's in the power of the responsible parents to avoid companies like Apple in order to preserve the freedom of their children.

Besides, I'm far more concerned about the parents who send their kids to this sort of "let's turn them into consumers before they even earn their own money" camp than the kids themselves. I'm also concerned about any grown adult who doesn't have the judgement to see through this sort of indoctrination.

indoctrination?! wtf!

I registered my son because he was interested in photography and now video editing I do with my GoPro ...

oh, thank you for your concern and please go back to the cave you came from!

this is funny stuff

I really really REALLY hate this.

By all means teach young people how to use technology and computers and be creative using software on those device.

That is great, amazing and fully encouraged.

For one company to basically iBrainwash and use it basically as a PR marketing tool, in a attempt to show kids what can be done on THEIR brand of computers only should not be allowed.

Concept is great in general, but shame on Apple for targeting children for their own long term ends.

Children should be taught and shown EVERYTHING to fully educate them and show them what's out there across the whole world of computing/tech. Not just 1 brand of goods.

Shameful.

Lighten up. Isn't any company allowed to do anything positive anymore without the negative nancys and debbie downers coming out of the woodwork? Apple is using their own money to hold these free workshops. Did you expect Apple to give an introduction to Windows?

Sure, there's something in it for Apple in the long run, but that doesn't make it any less fun and educational for those kids. No one is being forced to enroll their children in these workshops; they are a fun and informative introduction to filmmaking with iMovie, as well as interactive storytelling with iBooks Author, aimed at parents who want to expose their kids to new and exciting things, while broadening their horizons.

Sometimes I think this world could use more appreciative people, and fewer cynics.
