I'm ready to buy my first Mac, an iBook, but before I do I was wondering if anyone knows if the Apple Retail Stores do the build-to-order options instore?

nope but they do have some models that have slight upgrades to them. So they may have a more expensive version with a bigger hard disc and more ram etc.

Wait untill april to buy though, we may see an ibook update

April is a week away. Wait. The next event is supposedly sometime around the 1st. you may see either a drop in current ibook prices or a new ibook for waiting all of a week.

I'm itching to buy a small laptop too, but I recommend you do what I'm doing: wait until Wednesday, 4/5.

Lots of speculation over some sort of announcment over the 30th anniversay. So I'm guessing (like almost everyone else) that if something gets released, it will be on Tuesday 3/28, Saturday 4/1, or Tuesday 4/4.

Worst case scenario, you only wait a week & a half.

As everyone has said...wait that week and see what's coming out as you may get something really worth the wait. If not no big deal and you still can get something great 😀
Before I even knew of MacRumors I bought an iMac, two weeks later I returned it, got charged the restocking fee to get a G4 iLamp iMac. If I knew of the MR site before hand it would have saved me $$$ and the hassle of the return.

I have said many times before that I would not buy from the Apple store because of the restocking fee. This is a very good reason for that. If you buy something now not knowing of the possibility of a new machine coming out, and then a new one is announced next week, Apple will charge you a restocking fee to return it. Fry's, CompUSA, and Best Buy do not (although they techinically can, they never have).

The thing is I'm buying my Mac from John Lewis (department store in UK) and I can get a discount there cos I work for them, but they don't get the new Macs in until around a month plus after they're released. And the new Macbook (iBook) will probably cost more than the current iBook, and I only have enough cash for the current iBook and knowing I'd probably spend it before it comes out.

Keep in mind, that the new iBooks will almost certainly be the same price or even cheaper. VERY few instances Apple will update the product and up the price. The new Mini is the ONLY item I can think of that did this, as the Intel iMac stayed the same I believe. But if your store won't get it for a month, then its up to you...Personally, I'd wait, because an Intel iBook would prob KILL a g4, even with a solo proc.

Edit...maybe not KILL, but it would probably run a few circles around the g4

Well, I've done it. I've bought myself a 12" Powerbook, and I'm so happy with it. Thanks for your advice, sorry I went and bought a completly different computer.
