This is a good move. As more and more software is released for the Mac, there's more and more of a need to actually see it in use. I'm excited.

Thats what they should have been doing since long time ago instead of making those childish ads.
They need to show why Macs are actually better instead of just saying it.

You'd rather watch someone plugging in a firewire drive and clicking on time machine than watch this?

I think the ad they made would get a lot more attention than showing someone clicking on things.

Showing it off in the store is a great place to demo software. Seeing and using Time Machine in person is great. Watching someone do it on TV? Boring.

Hmm, Apple should of put Psystar out of business by now. However they haven't. This means a couple of things. First, Psystar has a case: If Apple controls both the hardware and software in their computers then technically they have a monopoly. Back in the Power PC days no one bothered with challenging this because Apple was considered a niche player. Apple is no longer a niche player and the fact that they now use common Intel processors opens them up to being cloned. I'm personally all in favor of the clones. Apple neglects their Pro/desktop market. Fixed pricing on outdated hardware is their greatest sin. Eliminating key hardware like firewire and Blu-ray is pretty severe as well. I'm willing to pay a premium for the software but not so much for the hardware.

No average consumer knows about Psystar. Apple has nothing to worry about.

Apple doesn't win switchers based on hardware.

A person shopping around for a computer, walking into an Apple store, is going to see table after table of expensive Core 2 Duo laptops.

To most, that's not impressive. Pretty, expensive hardware on display is not a reason to switch.

However, someone spending 10 minutes with them, showing them how OS X and iLife programs are integrated, and all of the things that the included software can accomplish, ... that almost always gets them excited and wanting to switch.

IMO, this makes perfect sense.

What are you suggesting? Arson? Thugs? Lazer beams?

However they haven't.

Maybe because they thought the legal system made more sense than some sort of Dr. Evil plan. And the legal system takes time.

This means a couple of things.

Yes, it means they're using lawyers instead of whatever it is you have in mind. Wow, shocking.

Am I the only one who read the headline as Apple stores will receive software that highlights facelifts?

Lol, I thought it was software that lifts highlights in photographs, now that I read it, it still sounds wrong...

That's cool that they are taking a look at at the software end of things and trying to bring out the importance of it...

BUT that doesn't excuse the Mac Mini for not being updated for 2 years.

seeing the quality of recently released consumer software from apple they shoud better stick with hardware as marketing focus.

i'm talking about the lame mobile me experience (push email is still a hit or miss), syncing of addresses via mobile me, the nice but way too slow Numbers app, the less than perfect face recognition in iPhoto, the useless Flickr upload in iPhoto with the risk of loosing pics, security problems in safari, the great Automator that needs lots more functions and many more.

i hope apple focusses on software and makes better, faster apps and a more complete line up of apps.

I am just guessing but I would imagine they have put some effort into researching this decision. The best guess is feedback is shaping the store. I could be wrong but when a company is as large as Apple you do not change your retail stores without a good reason.

On a side note I am looking forward to an update. Normally I fear change but the stores seem to have a rather confusing layout to me.

Have u ever worked in retail? Store layouts change as the focus or philosophy of a company changes. They refresh their products yearly. Why not give the placed in which they sell them a new look and feel? The first version of the apple store is great. Very stylish and artitectural. I'm excited to see the next...

Sounds overdue

Good idea. Anyone who's talked to friends, coworkers, or family about switching know one of the first questions about Mac that comes up, after the price, is what about applications......
Most people know Apple makes great but pricey hardware they aren't as informed when it comes to the applications that run on that hardware.

Given that hardware differences are largely cosmetic post-Intel-transition, software is what will sell Macs. A good call on Apple's part, probably.

Just need a simple answer

For what reason did Apple decide to build Macs with glossy screens? I don't need to reflect every fluorescent bulb in the ceiling. I don't need to catch sight of Jobs creeping up behind me. And I'm not a graphic artist.
Hmm. Maybe that's why.
I have no intention of buying any Mac with a mirror-like screen, and no intention of paying extra for a matte screen.
:confused:I'm truly sorry about that decision by Apple.

The problems you talk about are a small and fairly insignificant situation. What makes a Mac a Mac is the combination of the hardware and the software. And without the software, all you have is a good looking PC.

The "lame MobileMe experience" is a fairly rare issue, now that most of the kinks have been worked out. Sure, seven or eight months ago there were some issues, but anything else is few and far between. The same goes for many of the other things you're talking about. "Less than perfect face recognition in iPhoto" -- fyi, it's face recognition! There are 360-degrees of possible angles that can be taken with a camera. Face recognition will never be "perfect" because it will always require the help of a person's knowledge and experience before knowing who's who.

What do you mean by will? Menlo Park Apple Store was revamped last week.

On the dock of every Mac, there are 2 stacks, one that says "Ways to Use a Mac" and one that says "People who Use Macs"

In ways to use a Mac, they have folders like video editing or managing financing. You open this folder to find links to applications these people would use, and documents/movies as examples of what these people will make. In People who use a Mac, you'll find the same thing but for creative pros, students, families, business, etc.

Also, they replaced the iMacs used for one to ones with MacBook Pros, which really cleans up the one to one area.

For the iPhone/iPod area they are focusing a lot on software too. Showing off apps is a big part of this area based on the images they put in this area.

does anyone else wonder is this is an indication that apple thinks that it will lose in it's court action with Psystar? If they are forced to allow clones, a reinvention to focus on software would be a necessity.

The fact remains that os x is designed to run apple hardware only, always has and always will.

I see arguements aganist this referring to the windows model of an os that runs on most hardware yet apple set the precident with os and hardware here.

Bad idea. Who the crap cares about iLife and iWork enough to necessitate entire sections of an apple store? The Apple Store needs to focus more on the variability of software available to the Mac. If I were to go in there expecting to switch from a PC, and all I saw were TWO PIECES OF SOFTWARE available, I'd refuse to switch. Apple needs to show the market that there is such a wide array of software from third party vendors and from Apple to fill almost all niches of computer life.

Idiots.

Question: Why do you have your display aimed at the ceiling? I've found the glossy screen to be much easier to see and read than the typical matte screen and much, much easier to clean.
