I'm not seeing anywhere what the fee is for early upgrades so this is a question mark right now.
Nothing seems to say you can UPGRADE before the lease term is up, which would lead the rule to be no early upgrade, you stay in the 12 month, 24 month, 36 month till its done or you pay the remaining balance then you can upgrade. At least that is the way it seems.

The website says you can... For a fee...

This thing is just a fee ridden mess. They're just playing games on where they hide the costs

And that’s what I don’t like about it vs. the iPhone upgrade program. I now have to do a 12 month lease to upgrade annually if I want that where as I had flexibility with the two year terms of the iPhone upgrade program.

Otherwise I’m for leasing a quickly depreciating asset. It makes financial sense with the resale values getting worse it seems every year.

Plus playing around with it and pretending to do a checkout, If you do it via Finance through Apple Card or use this new hot mess program, you pay a activation fee for one of the 3 carriers it seems even though I do not use one of those carriers. I typically get a T Mobile one but I utilize Spectrum Mobile and never had to pay T Mobile a activation fee due to I was not activating it with them, but now it seems we have to pay the carrier as well even if not using them?

It appears that you will have to have a Klarna account to manage the lease... don't love that. So, it sounds like if I want to "get out" of the current iPhone Upgrade program, I need to either switch over to the Apple Upgrade program (defeating the purpose), or keep paying my Citizens Bank loan for the remainder.

Wonder what sort of trade-in credit I'd get for a 17 Pro Max in 20272 😅
Apple just sent emails to everyone on the IUP if you have made at least 12 payments on the IUP you can turn your device in right now and they will close the loan and you pay nothing or you can make the 24 payment and own the device.

For those who are currently upgrading their phones, this is pretty simple. The email I got stated, as in the screenshot below, that once you’ve made 12 payments, which for me usually coincides with the release of the new phones, you can order one choosing the upgrade lease as the payment method. You will complete a lease application. Then return the phone with their return kit that will be shipped to you. Once they have it your loan will be closed. If you haven’t made 12 payments at that time you can include and pay that balance.

This seems identical to the current method except for completing the lease agreement. Everything else is what I’ve been doing with the yearly upgrades. The other additional step would be picking an AppleCare plan, or not.

I’m just saying why finance something for twelve bucks a month and then make one big payment of over $100. In that case may as well return it.

Maybe there’s a good reason for people to do this in some cases.
I think you are missing something here, your "one big payment" is less than the big payment you would have made when purchasing it outright. Why would that then lead you to think "in that case may as well return it"?

I don't follow your logic. In either case, an offer of 0% interest and no other fees (outside of you straying outside the terms) means your cash can be working for you elsewhere. Others and I have explained this already but its the same reason why you don't make extra payments on any loan with a lower % than what your money is earning elsewhere.

Ah, I see that email in my inbox - at least there's that option since the website FAQ seemed to say otherwise - emphasis mine:

What does the end of the iPhone Upgrade Program mean for me?

If you’re a member of the iPhone Upgrade Program, there’s no action you need to take at this time. Your loan agreement with Citizens One remains active and you’ll continue making your monthly payments until your 24-month term is complete. Once you’ve made enough payments to be eligible for your next iPhone, we’ll make it easy to get it in a way that works for you. Or you can continue making payments until your 24-month term is complete and the device is yours to keep.

I may just take them up on the exit and buy a phone outright, but I definitely don't want to have to juggle visiting the store (per the email) around launch day just to return the phone and get a new one 🥴

Oh well, at least there's communication on it - thanks for the heads-up.

My understanding is that you can upgrade. It isn’t clear when an upgrade is offered but one can only assume it’s after a year.
In terms of paying remaining balance, that’s to come off the lease agreement and buy the phone outright. If you look at the cost of monthly payments multiplied by 24, it’s less than the cost of buying the phone outright. That’s where the final payment comes in.
Does anyone see where it lists what the final purchase price would be at the end of the lease?

It does seem like the fee is most likely the rest of the MSRP so you would lose the flexibility of upgrading after a year on a 2 year lease.

Article states that’s not supported:
MVNOs like Mint Mobile or Visible are not supported.

It also mentions that a carrier plan is required.

You could also just trade in with Apple though. As an example, a 16 Pro Max traded in for a 17 Pro Max would get you $695, meaning you only paid an effective $404 for a year of usage.
It's a good point and I might look into it this year however it's actually more like $499 net for the year of usage. $1199 minus $700 trade in value for the 16 Pro max at the time of the 17 Pro max release. What is interesting is they don't list specific storage sizes just models so if you have a 1TB pro max you are going to get the same trade in value as a 256GB model, that sucks!!

You can go to the Apple Store right now and check the prices. If you got a 256 GB 17 Pro Max with the Apple Upgrade program today, it would cost $49.99 a month. AppleCare is $13.99 a month, for a total of $63.98 a month, plus tax. My after tax cost today for that exact same thing with iUP is $61. So it’s pretty easy to verify it costs most today than it did with the iUP yesterday, and that’s with the phone prices staying exactly the same. My other comment was simply stating the gap will be even larger IF phone prices go up, while also showing monthly payment costs have already gone up without a price increase on the phone.
When you signed up for iUP you paid the taxes up front! This new plan the taxes are in the monthly payments hence the difference in cost...........

That's in line with what I'm thinking. For me, it largely looks like the same program with slightly different terms (like Apple Care not being rolled into the price.) But, looking at the lease checkout page, if I pick the same model that I currently have, the 12-month terms are $58.33/mo. with Apple Care purchased separately. If I were to go the monthly route for AC+, it's a few dollars more expensive per month than my payment under the IUP.

If I pay for a year of AC+ up-front, the cost per month goes down and then it's very close to what I currently pay: $69.50/mo. under IUP and the equivalent of $69.99/mo. under the AUP.

Not everyone may be able to put up the $139.99 at time of leasing, so the new program isn't going to be as close for everyone.

ACMI says the same but I can confirm that many of us have MVNOs and were able to use ACMI for our devices by choosing T-Mobile at checkout. It doesn't work for the base models though because it tries to verify your eligibility to have the $30 carrier free charge removed but all I had to do was skip the connect to T-Mobile screen three times (apparently now you also have to select that you didn't get the verification text) and I had a fully unlocked device on ACMI. Currently using it on US Mobile.

You are correct. I factored it off the old $1099, not the new $1199. My bad.

And yes, Apple does eat any value from storage upgrades when you trade in with them, which is part of the reason I always get the base storage.

It's not a few dollars more expensive as I said right above this post IUP charged taxes up front. They are in the monthly charge in the new program they are identical other than when you pay the tax.......

Extra fine print: If you buy something over Klarna, it usually requests read access for your bankong account data for 30 days and probably takes every bit of data it can get there. Just if you're wondering how that service finances itself.

The article said: “Apple Card users can continue to buy devices with the ‌Apple Card‌ Monthly Installments plan or choose Apple Upgrade and get 3% Daily Cash back on lease payments made with ‌Apple Card‌.”

I’m curious about this statement, given that a FAQ I read at https://www.apple.com/us/shop/apple-upgrade says “some card networks, like AMEX and UnionPay — and some card issuers, like Chase and Capital One — are not accepted at Klarna.”

As we all know, Chase will become the issuer for Apple Card sometime next year. So what happens then?
